Since when is a provincial politician allowed to stick his nose into civic politics? What has one got to do with the other?

I think the province controls how the cities are divided. Harris merged 6 cities into 1. So I think the power is obviously at the provincial level. I think doing it before the october election is a mistake.

The Constitution divides power between the Federal and Provincial governments. Municipal governments don't even exist at the constitutional level. They are a creation of the province, with the province conferring however much power it wants to a municipality. In theory, a provincial government could disband all municipal ones and take over all municipal functions onto itself. It would make for very inefficient governance, but a province could do that or even appoint a municipal governor if it wanted to.

Ford has the constitutional right to do so as municipalities are a provincial responsibility.

However, there is law and jurisprudence in Ontario that requires municipal input in decisions like this. The Province can't just arbitrarily decide to fire half of the city government without that same government being consulted. Probably, Toronto will sue.

Nice start, Doug. What an unnecessary way to begin your governmemt by pissing off what, the sixth largest government in Canada?

Ford comes across to me as a little high handed. Now that he's out of civic politics why would he care? Maybe he's just using this to test his muscles!

He appears to be doing this to get even with a city council that rejected him repeatedly.

If that's what we have to look forward to over the next four years, ...

Other cities manage quite well with fewer bench warmers, very entertaining to watch trough feeders at city council berate poor ole doug for shunting their gravy train onto a siding. Safe bet they are tonight praying for the second coming of a liberal free spender.
Could be doug is fulfilling his late brothers' promise...the TO gravy train ends with me.
