If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if lightning struck a giant bag of unpopped popcorn with a lightning rod mounted in it, you may soon have your answer.
Cineplex Entertainment has placed a six-metre-high blue popcorn bag containing unpopped popcorn and a lightning rod near Hwy. 401 between Windsor and Tilbury.
It’s all part of a campaign entitled Weather or Not that the movie theatre company is running that includes “surprise and delight activations, rain or shine, to help Canadians prioritize pleasure by making sure they don’t miss out on the entertainment.”
The Windsor area was chosen because it receives the most lightning strikes of any region in Canada.
"As the next phase of our Weather or Not campaign, this activation proves that entertainment is always possible, even in a thunderstorm," said Pat Marshall, vice president of communications and investor relations for Cineplex Entertainment, in a news release.
"We're encouraging Canadians to tune into our livestream to see how this ultimate science experiment plays out. While we're arguably Canada's popcorn experts, not even the team here knows what will happen."

People are also invited to vote on whether or not they believe the popcorn will pop on the website and can get a chance at a free Cineplex popcorn.
"Lightning is an extremely complex phenomenon that strikes 44 times per second across the planet," said Mark Robinson, meteorologist and stormhunter with The Weather Network. "The Cineplex lightning popcorn bag is located right in the heart of Canada's lightning alley, a likely spot for a strike to touch down."
Earlier this summer Cineplex surprised beachgoers with free beach towels made to look like movie tickets that could be redeemed for free movies.
The giant popcorn bag will remain in place until Sept. 2.
