ST. JOHN'S, Nfld. (CP) - Oscar-winning actor and aspiring singer Russell Crowe thrilled a packed house during a surprise visit to a St. John's pub Monday night.
Crowe was joined by Great Big Sea singer Alan Doyle - who produced Crowe's debut solo album - during a set at the downtown establishment. The set was closed to the media, but was watched from the outside by scores of fans and curious onlookers who stole a peek at the star through the pub's windows.
Rumours of Crowe's visit - and then reports of Crowe sightings - rocketed around the Newfoundland capital Monday.
Crowe took in some familiar tourist stops, including the commanding view of the city and the Atlantic Ocean from atop Signal Hill.
He also braved chilly winds that he clearly wasn't expecting on a June day.
Doyle, who produced Crowe's album My Hand My Heart, invited Crowe to come to Newfoundland for a visit.
Crowe, who formerly fronted the rock band 30 Odd Feet of Grunts, drew heady applause from the audience in the pub, both for his music and what were described as humorous stories he told between songs.
One of the anecdotes included his arrest last week in New York, following an incident in which he threw a phone at a hotel clerk.
Crowe's relaxed and self-deprecating style warmed up the crowd, audience members said.
"He's very much like Newfoundlanders. A great man," one man said while leaving the pub.
"It was a really great Newfoundland party atmosphere," said another.
