Celebrating Christmas ain’t cheap in the Big Apple.
According to the New York Post, Christmas trees are selling for upwards of US$1,000 in the tony Manhattan neighbourhood of Greenwich Village.
The 13-foot white firs are selling for an incredible $77 per foot, said Greenwich Village tree seller Heather Neville. Of course, that $1,000 price tag includes a tree stand and tip, as well as installation.
“They are not a traditional Christmas tree, so they are harder to get,” Neville told the New York Post. “Not many farmers grow them. To find a good one is difficult.”
Neville said a 15-foot tree, if she had one, would go for $1,200.
Prices like that have some festive revellers calling out Neville for gouging and selling only to the affluent.
“(She is) kind of the Grinch in the whole deal,” Tom Evans, who was toting a six-foot tree he bought for $80, told the Post. “She’s catering to rich people or she is just after the money. A tree is a tree, and there is no difference.”

Canada has more than a few spare swamp spruce. Forget the tree and buy more gifts, not one person would miss the dead tree.
