This really should be a must read for everyone especially first nations people.

John A was the first Prime minister to push for voting rights for first nations people. And when he did finally manage to get them some, it was taken away by the next liberal prime minister. Most people don't know that.

Well obviously, because these days Canada is bad and he started Canada! (the bastard!)

Interestingly enough i think John A is badly misunderstood. I don't think he was a racist at all (or more accurately no more than the average person of his day). I think he was an ethnist, or culturist if you will. If you read his comments you note that he never really suggested the first nations were an inferior people - his issue was that he felt they had an inferior culture. And he wanted to 'fix' that. Why would anyone WANT to wear buckskin and worship spirits when they could be drinking tea and eating crumpets and worshipping god and the queen? they just need to be taught how good men behave and then they can do whatever they like and they'll be good englishmen same as him. Who wouldn't want that? As soon as they see how great it is they'll all want that for themselves and their kids. Right?

He was pretty much the same about the 'chinaman' as he called them. He didn't have an issue with them being chinese, he had an issue believing that they would remain loyal to china and not Canada and would influence elections and such to china's benefit instead of Canada's. There's some fascinating hansard reads about that. He felt they couldn't be trusted with the vote as a result and was looking for a way to seperate 'canadian' chinese from chinese chinese , At the time they were considered 'naturalized' (citizens) after 3 years of residency.

I think in modern times we oversimplify or twist things to fit our modern perceptions of such behavior but i'm not sure the reality is quite that cut and dry.

Yes, this idea of viewing history through the eyes of 2022 and judging accordingly is bull. I think Residential Schools were created with the best intentions of that time but implemented poorly. Again the key words are "of that time".

The best intentions of that time was to integrate the natives into "modern" society. And indeed that was not a bad idea. Many natives sent their kids to the schools in hopes of them getting an education and out of the wilderness. Unfortunately many of the religious leaders of the time did not have the same intention.
