The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has been awarded the broadcast rights to the next two Olympic Games, weeks after rival private network and lead broadcaster for the London Games, Bell Media, backed out of a partnership between the two.

In a release, the International Olympic Committee confirmed that the country’s public broadcaster will bring to viewers the Winter Games from Sochi, Russia two years from now and again during the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Brazil.

Bell Media (then CTVglobemedia Inc.) paired with Rogers Communications Inc. to pay $153-million for rights to the 2010 event in Vancouver and the London Summer Games. But with an unprofitable Games in 2010 and London expected to again generate a loss, Rogers backed out of the bidding for 2014 and 2016 last year.

Hopefully they can keep their private boxes.

I would have prefered one of the private broadcasters winning. Given the cuts being made to the CBC I doubt they have a whole lot of disposable income at the moment. There's also the fact that I don't really care about the Olympics too.

This is good, beats watching the crap produced by CTV/TSN.

I've never found the crap produced by the CBC to be any better.

Interviews and related stuff, great. The rest of the fluff, can go.

The Seacrest thing on American networks, is intolerable.

Everything on the American network is tape delayed and edited to the max. Feels like I'm watching karaoke sports.

That is interesting. I haven't watched the Olympics and no one I speak to mentions it. And I speak to 30 plus different people a day.

Could it be they are overblown in their importance?

Are Canadians still paying for the Big Owe, the 1976 Olympics?

I find that with the current system, I can watch CTV, TSN, and Sportsnet, and see different events, live.

When CBC covers the Olympics, we can only see on thing at a time, and even then, it's usually talking heads and summaries and recaps, interspersed with human interest stories and infinite repeats of announcers telling us stuff, but never showing it live.

I'm very pleased with the CTV coverage that I've seen.

You only speak to 30 people a day? No wonder you're missing out on what people are doing.

Well it all depends on my day. Someday's it's a lot more and most day's I don't want to talk to any but I have to.

I will add that I have no interest in the Olympics and sports in generall but I still don't hear people talk about the Olympics. Most people seem to be indifferent to them.

The only spurt of talk was when they opened in London and some schmucks wondered publicly about Toronto once again wanting to get even more world classy and bidding for some future Owelympics but that idea seems to have died out as quickly as it came..........thankfully........
