ok, I know that we can spend up to 6mths less 1 day in the US, but how long can this go on for??

I plan on buying a home in Florida and basicaly want to spend most of my time there, while visiting Toronto probably 3-4 times/year or more. How long can I do this for without any type of US visa....

3-4 months Florida, come back for a week, 3-4 mths, come back for a week, and so on......

appreciate any info and help.... cheers

You had best be very careful and research American Tax Law before you buy property. Biggest of all is that they have Succession Duties there and you do not have to be a citizen for them to look at "World Wide" income and assets. If you own property...you pay.

You can hold duel citizenship. The U.S. only recognizes one, but doesn't care if you have another one somewhere.

In Florida we have what is called a "Homestead" exemption. Taxes without it can and do go up every year based upon true evaluation of your home. With the Homestead exemption, $50,000 is taken off your true evaluation and taxes are limited to no more than 3% per year. You have to be a resident of Florida to take advantage of it. (not sure if that means you have to be a citizen or not though.)

I can't help you there but I welcome you to one of our finest warm weather states. Don't forget to go to Disney World.

You need to review your math. 6 months less a day per year would not allow you to go for 3-4 months, and then come back for a week...

You also need to look at how long you can be away before you lose your medical coverage.

Here is a little PS: that might help. The people I know come down here from Quebec every year for 3-4 months in the winter. They own their own home here. *very nice one on the intercoastal waterway)
