Canadians Should Pay NOT to be Poisoned: NDP

Jack Layton is starting to listen to the voices of many of his constituents. The organic food market has exploded in the last few years as the population is slowly becoming aware of the many poisons in their food supply. One of these poisons is trans fats and Jack has bravely stood up to the gigantic food companies that are wilfully poisoning Canadians.

As with every good idea that comes out of the political con-game, corruption is ever present. Jacks ideas are no different.

So what is Jacks plan to remove trans fats from the food supply? Some legislation banning its use? Some big black warning labels on food products? Maybe encourage a lawsuit on behalf of the many Canadians sickened by company greed? No, that would be bad for business. Jacks plan is much better. Corporate handouts. That is right, Jack wants you to pay these billion dollar companies to stop poisoning you.

That is like paying big tobacco to develop less toxic cigarettes.

We can just add this to the long list of examples (here are a few of them) why the NDP is no different than any other major Canadian political party. For those that still believe in the NDP as some sort of "left leaning" alternative, please give up for everyone's sake.

For more information on trans fats please read this

Osama Bin Layton as usual is wrong wrong wrong. Transfat is not in organically or normaly grown vegetables or fruits. In fact organically grown vegetables is really a myth. Farmers need to use chemicals to get rid of the bad bugs and weeds in their soil just like Doctors give us prescriptions that have chemicals in them to get rid of the bad bugs in our body.

The folks who wash their vegetables before they prepare them for cooking do not have a problem what so-ever. The folks who have weak immune systems will always have a problem because of their food intake and lack of exercise. The number of fat pig kids which are allowed by their parents are a huge indication of weak immune systems. They eat junk food and sit on their fat asses watching TV.

In short Herbicides and Pesticides make our soil healthy which makes the environment healthy. That is a proven fact and the staff at Health Canada are the ones who approves or disapproves products from prescription drugs to herbicides and pesticides. 80% of those products never make it to the marketplace.

Taliban Jack is an idiot and doesn't know what he is talking about- so what else is new? Nothing !

It is very possible to grow crops AND livestock without herbicides, pesticides and hormones. They are not necessary to the crop, but they ARE necesary to satiate the greed of the growers and consumers. Typically organic farmers have lower yields in their crops. This is due to the fact that they have a higher weed incidence, and the fact that they have not inundated their soil with growth hormone.
Pesticieds and herbicides to enhance crop growth leech into the soil, and we drink it. Not poisonous?
Anyone who thinks not must wear blinders.

Consumers cry about the pesticide and herbicide use on their food, but I"d bet dollars to donuts the cry would be louder yet if produce became organic and the price was jacked the way it would have to be to accomodate the lower yield.

Weak immune systems are not due exclusively to lack of exercise and poor diet. Sometimes it's due to disease and genetics. Their bodies are more susceptible to the dangers of the chemicals in their food.

As for chemicals in medicine that are designed to help our bodies and cure disease.. if you think those chemicals do not cause problems with long term usage , you need to expand your research. ;)

Ya the natural growers are pure saints. If we had only the stuff they grow on the shelf, our city consumers would be buying out of country foods.
What is the consumer looking for? Low price, and good looking, good quality food. People can yell till hell freezes over, but when they push their own cart down the food isles, they still buy non organic food stuffs.
Organic may be very healthy, but when I look at it, it reminds me that cod liver oil is good for me too, but it doesn't mean I will eat it.

Is it really so bad to expect people to be responsible for their own diet?

No one is forcing you to wolf down that third bag of twinkies.

the potato famine in ireland and countless other disasters would have been prevented by considered use of pesticides and fungicides. Incidentally there is considerable evidence that the witch trials in Salem could have been stopped by the use of fungicides too.

don't be so quick to ban things you don't entirely understand. I am all for a reduction in the heavy use of crazy-strong pesticides etc but i am dead against the "organic" [lit. containing carbon] movement. For a start the name is silly. secondly we shouldn't have to pay more for people to do less, and thirdly we have no guarantee that they're actually any better for us.

btw how did gentle giant get banned? was it the above statement?

Edit: don't worry about that. i read his posts. I understand now.
