Canadian Municipalities Bankrupted by Fairness

I regret that this recurrent multi-billion dollar scandal is of no interest to right or left, to landed or tenant. But when one actually tries to change something real, something big, something now, the talkers all fade away, and those doing wrong just keep on screwing them.

I'm a right winger, but the rich never asked for this. The wealthy never approved of it. The system makes no obvious error in writing, never had a plot , but circumstances were convenient, over time, for apparently systemic corruption because the man who paid $20,000 property taxes per year somehow won his appeal, but it did not filter down.

It's high time for more than filtering, but who cares? Not who 'cares' but who REALLY cares?

So the rich DID ask for it. They asked for it by complaining that their tax burden was too high. The "systemic corruption" smiled and said to the wealthy, "You're right! You're paying too much tax." The wealthy felt all warm and cuddly inside. They could only show their APPROVAL and satisfaction by smiling back at the taxman and saying, "I knew you'd see it my way."

Sometimes reading between the lines just means removing the fluff. In your post, it was just a matter of filtering out the excuses to get to the truth. :smile:

Warrior_Won, I am living in small town Ontario. I have resided also in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The status quo involves not just inaccurate and therefor unfair taxation, but massive deception and miscarriage of justice. It is incredible that this condition is so prevelant in Canada and has persisted for years. The answer to many questions are in Dark Beaver's admission that he is not familiar with the matter. In fact, apartment dwellers are under the general illusion that they pay no property tax and that water is free. They are virtually disenfranchised in this regard, have their name left off the tax roll, receive no bill, no receipt, no notice of assessment and no invitation to appeal. The property owner collects the taxes for the city as an undivided portion of the rent. Needless to say, renters are fast and loose with regard to city budget matters and school board budget matters as well, if they bother to be concerned at all. They don't even know that they are paying the bill, and a higher proportion of it than the mayor or the industrialist or the doctor.

Couple of thoughts here.
Some of the really old homes have a high Tax rate because the land they sit on is worth 10 times the value of the house. Sometimes the doctors house and land is worth less.
Would Apartments pay a high rate because of the value of land-including the parking lots, the extra services required by the building including water, fire protection, inspections conducted by various protection agencies?

The tax rate does not change with value. The tax rate on a mansion is the same as on a shack. The value and assessment (of value) are different. The GST rate is also the same for a Cadillac and a bicycle.

Apartment rates are higher because Cadillac socialists do not understand that the tenants pay the rent, including taxes. They think that they are gouging the landlord. The mill rate for apartments is higher than for single family homes!

The fact that the system has been corrupted cannot be avoided or denied. It can be ignored however.
