It's hard to explain but if you look at the thread on MJ's blog for last night's show, you'll see our exchange. I basically said he didn't write a review, and I was disappointed, and it sounded like he was trying to avoid saying anything negative. (I forget, now.) But I said I liked his interview with Kris.

He had already linked to his review, (and had called it a review), so he came back and wrote, "Here's the link to the recap, then." Or words like that.

So then I wrote a little more, stating why I like his interview with Kris, and he came back and apologized to me for being rude. He said he had gotten criticized on his blog from commenters who said he hadn't written a review and it was more of a recap, so I guess he was sensitive about that. Anyhow, you can see it if you go to the thread.

I'm probably not making much sense.

I was happy he took time out to interview Kris and attend the show. I know it's kinda his job but they do choose what to attend. So I didn't mind if it was a recap or a review. I liked it either way. The interview was all kinds of awesome though. You're right :) (I hate the #'s game too. And I was reading on Brian's blog earlier today where he mentioned that the #'s of people coming to see Kris are consistent with what a new artist would get with a hit single and if you take the idol factor out) that's kinda what I thought too and he did seem positive about the experience. So I'm good.

And I think Brian understood what you meant Ross. It's all good.

That's nice. I guess I must come across as a picky, critical person, sometimes (or all the time), since I question a lot of stuff. It must be annoying. But I guess in this case I was disappointed because I waited up until what seemed like 2:00 in the morning for his review, and I can't help it, I think any indication that Kris was good would have been welcome. Apparently (according to his comments after the article) this isn't his way, but I didn't know that, than. It seemed to me he was going out of his way not to give an opinion. I guess he was, since he explains that's his style. He's not a critic. But, not having expected that, I was disappointed. I'm glad I got to let him know I enjoyed his interview.

I can't watch the links now, I'm at work, but thanks, I'll watch later.

Crowd size? I don't care, as long as it's a decent-sized crowd. Did you see the comment on MJ's about GRO playing to a crowd of 40, recently? That's what I mean. Kris is not playing to a crowd of 40 (though he may; that sometimes happens, too). I've been in plays and I know you don't always sell out. Sometimes, even the best plays don't sell out, and the crap does. I've experienced that. (Often it has to do with publicity, but dramas never sell as well as comedies, for ex.)

So anyway, what I want to say is, Kris fans cannot take the bait about this stuff. The "other" fans will try to say it matters. It's only because their guy has bigger crowds. If he didn't, it wouldn't matter, all of a sudden.

Kris isn't really on a big, well-publicized tour, like Adam, and he doesn't have Orianthi or Allsion Iraheta opening for him, either. Actually, I wasn't even aware that Kris's headlining dates were going to be this frequent, this summer. But anyway, he's appearing in different combinations, with different artists, in large and small venues. So naturally it's quite a different thing.

LOL! No it's not annoying - for the record. I like hearing differing opinions because sometimes you just naturally assume that people think the same things you do. And they don't. How dare they, have minds of their own? :) So it's good to get a broader perspective.

Totally agree, and really agree about not taking the bait.

For me whenever I think about crowd size I think about the song Love this Town by Joel Plasket (remember Mitch sang it on CI?) Some of the of the lines in the song are

I played a show
In Kelowna last year
They said pick it up Joel
We’re dying in here
Picture one hand clapping
And picture half that sound
There’s a reason that I hate that town

It just happens on tour with touring bands. I also think about my Dad who went to see Neil Young (or was it Goldon Lightfoot..? Hmm.. Anyway it doesn't matter.. one of them) in Toronto before he was famous and he said there were like 5 people in the bar. So just because there are small crowds now, doesn't mean there will always be small crowds.

Drake and Hanson are causing riots!

Justin Gaston? *shudders*

A Cook/Kris fan I follow on twitter was at the show tonight. Posted this:

Got entire @GRO/ @krisallenband/ @ETMills Free Fallin/Ice Ice Baby mashup...will upload late. EPIC!

Free Fallin/Ice Ice Baby mashup? This cannot be anything else than epic. And how did they bring ET into this?

From Andrew Cook:

First, could you please fill me in on what the Sims is, because up until I saw your link I honestly thought, from skimming MJ's blog, that Kris's song was being used in an ad for Sims stores (do you have those up there?). What is it, a video game? ross is clueless.

Thanks for the Gordon Lightfoot/Neil Young story. It perfectly expressed what I was thinking. You know, I'm happy as a pig in **** for Adam, but there's something unreal about what's happening with him. I don't know. His fans are crazy, let's just face it square in the face. Kris is getting mostly music fans. Not freaky fan-crazy-ass-bitches. And it's good.

Thanks for the Joel Plaskett lyrics, too. I love that song, by the way. It's one of the few Canadian songs I heard before hearing it on CI. (I mean: Canadian songs that are not usually heard in the States. I don't know where I heard it, but I guess being the northernmost big US city on the east coast, Boston occasionally gets the breezes from eastern Canada.)

Okay, this is pretty radical, but I like Justin. Yeah, he may be a star-f***er but I think he's sort of good. I don't think he's the brightest light bulb in the appliance store, but there's something kind of intense about him and at the same time nice about him. Maybe he's just a big, misunderstood dork. Anyhow, Kris will straighten him out.

This is from "Dream Updates":

Everyone in the kitchen.
Justin is talking again about news he just got in a video chat with "Kris" about an upcoming gig - he will be opening for Kris - says Kris choose him (in response to question from Kara's mom)

ETA: That mashup sounds epic for sure.

YES! EPIC. Completely EPIC. NEED. NOW. Et came on stage with Kris.

David is a good dude. I love how he reached out to Kris and it seems like he's continuing the tradition. Nice.

It's a video game where you play god pretty much for the lifespan of your virtual town - highly addictive game that has sold a bazillion copies. So Kris's song is in the trailer and they played it at the press conference for all the new games by EA. Which is pretty cool, because I bet a LOT of gamers watched that broadcast.

but there's something unreal about what's happening with him. I don't know. His fans are crazy, let's just face it square in the face.

I agree it doesn't feel like reality. It may turn into reality, but right now it seems like forced hysteria. What do I know though? lol

That's actually how I saw him when Kris visited the Dream house. Very naive almost. I think Miley would pretty much run over him with the force of her personality alone. I don't think he ran that relationship that's for sure. Anyway, doing a favour for the boss of 19.. not a bad idea in the long run.

I'm sure most people were there for Drake. It's a weird combination though. I mean, Drake is definitely on my "will never buy that crap" list, while you know I love Hanson. I'm sure the contrary is very true as well for Drake fans.

Good for that Canadian dude though, his predicted sales look astonishing in the current music industry context.

Anyway, Hanson tweeted that they were very sorry that the show had to be cancelled.

Lee is going to sing something from Slumberland on his tonight show appearance. Crystal will also be on the the Tonight show at some point, and will perform.

Bits & Pieces: June 16, 2010

This annoys me. These two will perform on the show, Adam has performed (and has been on twice, I think). Kris was on the show one time, and he never performed.

So is it me or do Alex Wagner-Trugman and Megan Joy seem to be carrying on a flirtation via twitter?

The Lee on the Tonight show singing from Slumberland annoys me too. But, really why shouldn't he? Might as well sing from the album that's selling. Beautiful Day is going nowhere. Have either of you heard it on the radio? I haven't although CHUM is playing the Boxer a lot. CHUM is also sponsering the summer tour so they are promoing it a lot. By playing The Boxer.

Also Kris sang on Conan, Jimmy, Dave, and Ellen. One of those shows alone trumps the Tonight Show. But 4? Dude please.

(I peeked into the live chat with Siobhan and Aaron just now.. there were 26 people there. 26! These kids need promo in the worst way)

Alex and Megan crack me up.

And Wow good for Mitch. That's awesome. Hey Rosetta.. squee.. lol

I like that Lee will perform music from Slumberland. It's still what I like the most about him.

Have either of you heard it on the radio?

I've stopped listening to (mainstream) radio. Yep, I'm done. I do listen to CBC Radio 3, which is probably one of the best things I've ever discovered. I couldn't stand mainstream radio anymore. As long as they play Kesha, Katy and their friends, I won't listen again.

The Top Idol thing is so cute! I think it even turned Melinda into a fangirl! LOL.

It's really cool about Mitch. He's still alive! I still wonder why we hadn't heard about him before.

Hey Rosetta.. squee.. lol

Have you guys logged out of this forum lately? It looks way different when you're not logged in. There's grass, and stuff.

The Lee on the Tonight show singing from Slumberland annoys me too. But, really why shouldn't he? Might as well sing from the album that's selling.

Well, you understand I wasn't annoyed he's singing something from Slumberland. I was annoyed Kris wasn't asked to sing when he was on. And he's never been invited back, despite having had a hit single, and now another one to promote, while what's his name got to debut his new single on the show.

Beautiful Day is going nowhere. Have either of you heard it on the radio?

No. But I heard The Truth again, today. And I don't mind beating a dead horse: Pat Monahan being on that song is stupid, stupid. It doesn not grow on you, it does not get easier to hear the more you hear it. Otherwise, it's great. It actually brings a tear to my eye. It's moving. For anything on Pop radio to do that is pretty unusual. But Pat really spoils what I think would be the emotional high point of the song. Pat Monahan: good singer. Putting him together with Kris, to sing: good idea. But putting him on The Truth: bad idea. Good idea, wrong song.

I also heard Live Like We're Dying a couple of times on the radio this week.

I haven't although CHUM is playing the Boxer a lot. CHUM is also sponsering the summer tour so they are promoing it a lot. By playing The Boxer.

No radio station sponsors the tour here, as far as I know. This year it's at the Comcast Center, in Mansfield (where Kris and Adam played the Kiss Concert), not at TD Garden in Boston; and it's in July, not September, like last year. It's funny to think of the Idols concert in an outdoor type venue. (I tried to win tix on MJ's but didn't.)

Anyhow, I digress. I was going to say that since the tour isn't sponsored by a radio station, maybe that's why I haven't heard The Boxer, or anything else by Lee (or Crystal) on the radio.

Also Kris sang on Conan, Jimmy, Dave, and Ellen. One of those shows alone trumps the Tonight Show. But 4? Dude please.

That's a good way of looking at it. But I'm still annoyed at the Tonight show!

I really like Annabelle. Tis good stuff. Good call. It's not really pop or HAC is it? It would fit right in on Radio 3 though. :) Hopefully 19 doesn't interfere too much with Lee's sound. Maybe he'll be the first to be able to release something he wrote as a single.
(is that pushing it?)

(He sounds a bit like Oliver to me, Is that Just me?)

I wish they had just gone with the radio edit of the Truth, but I like the Pat version of the song now too. I just like Kris's version that bit more.

Yeah, I do hope they won't interfere too much with his sound. He does sound a bit like Oliver, but I hear mostly a lot of Dave Matthews. As much as I love some male singers with really smooth voices (Kris, Mraz, Charlie Winston), I have a complete weakness for those rougher voices (like Tim from Hey Rosetta!, Dan Mangan, Jay Malinowski, etc).

Here's Sweet Sweet from Lee. It's also more uptempo. Almost country, but I do like it a lot.

YouTube - Sweet Sweet - Lee DeWyze

Okay, I'm glad to see that I'm not crazy. And that I had actually heard the obvious similarities before realizing that people had already been doing Gaga/Ace of Base mashups.

Totally the same song:

YouTube - Don't Turn Around Alejandro Remix

And at 1:15 in the morning, I actually enjoyed that remix. Kill me now.

That would annoy me very much, seeing as Kris and David have not had the honor. I agree with progress, so it would be nice if that happened for Lee. But I hope that doesn't happen at the same time Kris continues to have to release songs he didn't write.

(He sounds a bit like Oliver to me, Is that Just me?)

No. Not just you. Me, too. I was going to write that last week, but then I forgot, I guess. I think I was re-watching his performance on Ellen (was he on Ellen?) and he sounded a lot like Oliver, to me.

(I'm not into voices like that, much, myself. Just a gut reaction. On the other hand, Casey's Bob Seger-ish type of voice, I tend to like, more. Interesting, he's probably going to go on a country label. I wish him the best but I don't like how they push people towards country who aren't really country. The music business sucks when people have to be slotted into these categories in order to make a good living in music. I also think this may be happening to Kris, either sooner or later -- kind of a smoothing out of his more original edges to fit him into a standard soft rock mold. And I don't want him to lose his originality.)

KAB need(s) to do some vlogs.

I wish they had just gone with the radio edit of the Truth, but I like the Pat version of the song now too. I just like Kris's version that bit more.

I've heard it three times now, on the radio, and I don't like the inclusion of Pat any more than I ever did. What do you like about it? Can you be more specific? Do you enjoy Pat's vocal in the song?

And I don't want him to lose his originality. I think he has said they respect him and his musical sensibility. But they also want to make the maximum amount of money.)

Yep. One of the main reasons why I hate the record labels and why I hope they go down in flames. At least with the indie bands, you know that you're listening to the music they really want to make, even if they don't have as much promotion and everything. We're really in the era of the musical "product" and it's truly depressing.
