Idol may become the avenue for people to explore the real independent
artists and not just feed on the music pablum the industry peddles now

That's an interesting thought. Can you say more on the subject? I know in some ways some people think Idol is the worst thing that happened to the music industry (not my opinion) and other people see it as a valid way to discover new talent. Do you have a more precise opinion about it?

missaddicted, one of the nice things about being signed with a music publisher is that they apparently place your songs in TV shows, movies, commercials, etc. They're trying to get revenue from the songs because they get a cut. I can't look at MJ's right now or I'd share some more deets.

damngrumpy, the idea of payola crossed my mind. I guess there's nothing illegal, but it seems that for the Billboard charts to be an accurate representation of sales, the record company shouldn't be in cahoots with a fanbase, telling them to buy this record and not that one, based on how they want the records to perform on the charts. As in:

If people only buy the EP (in its entirety), NOTHING counts for WWFM the single toward sales of the song and placement on Billboard. Instead, the EP is counted as an album. RCA wants the single sales foremost. If people can afford to do both as you indicated you were doing, that's great. But if it's a choice for some, buying the WWFM remixes will help Adam more because it will help push WWFM up the Billboard chart. And the bigger hit it is, perhaps the easier time Adam will have in getting radio play for IIHY.

missaddicted first of all thanks for the website information I will pass it along. You have in fact answered part of the comment by looking for websites and exploring
the unknown. Idol gives people the reassurance that other no name people can
sing and provide a talent base far beyond what they are used to. Think about it
this way. Every day we hear the same crap. Yes a lot of it is good but it is all just
kitty cutter stuff they pump it out for a six week run and it drops of the chart and
the next novelty comes along to take its place. We see it and hear it and switch
stations to hear the same stuff. People assume that is all there is. Stars get to
put songs out some good, and then they get to skate with a couple of junkers
until people move on Britney Spears is an example. Along come Idol, or the
British Talent Show. Someone comes off the street just like Elvis did at Sun
Records and becomes a sensation. Sometimes these folks do a better job on
a song than the modern artist. People begin to wonder what else is out there,
and not just younger people either. All of a sudden there are people listening
to talent they never heard of, songs that would normally never be heard. For
example the Pat Savage Dream of Odin CD, For those who don't think it will
work are those who would have bet against the Internet being successful.
More and more people are checking out alternative websites finding new material
and buying it. There are thousands of CD titles listed on all these sites and the
major record companies that once ruled the roost are starting to see sign of
trouble. In addition these obscure folks get their songs on CD and that allows
them to be recognised by publishing houses and seek the protection representation
they need. The big companies can no longer steal the song royalties from kids
trying to get started. What is happening is a music revolution, and even the radio
stations will be forced to change their habits in time. Satellite radio is good in fact
it forces local radio station markets to be more responsive to their listeners. Its
already happening in television thus the media wars over who pays.
In the near future local and regional talent will get heightened billing like they did in
the old days because local radio will need to find the niche market concept to survive
This is only the beginning of radio not the end, they are looking for purpose, a reason
to exist and survive. People will force the agenda by listening to websites and demanding their favorite music if station want listeners they will turn more and more
tor regional and local talent. It is a ways off but not that far, Now for those who are
in the advertising business, or smaller market promotion if they grasp the concept they will do very well as will the first stations who begin to chance. But I have been
around too many years, I see it coming but what do I know?

That's very interesting, thanks for explaining more your point of view and I do hope that it plays out the way you see it.

This is really interesting to me too. I guess you can add in streaming services too like la la and Pandora, Groovshark etc. Even ilike and youtube. I actually listen to a LOT of music on youtube. Signed, unsigned -- bedroom singer it doesn't really seem to matter. And now even youtube has revenue sharing for videos that receive a lot of hits.

CBC Radio 3 (I think it was 3) went to an all Canadian format after asking their listeners what they wanted and if I'm not mistaken I think the answer was pretty definite that people wanted a platform for Canadian artists.

Any way that artists can be heard and receive compensation and a larger platform has to be a good thing IMHO.

And it is true isn't it the first thing we do when they announce the Idol finalists.. look on youtube, myspace etc. for their other music. That's how I heard Kris's Brand New Shoes. Which isn't perfect by any means, but really has something that I liked and showed a lot of promise for the future music he might write.

Just listening to Little Bird. I really like it, really pretty tone to her voice. (lyrics.. also good ;))

sleepinin, I like it too, but then again she wrote the music and did the hard work.
I wrote the lyrics. It was really a note to my grand daughter to say that after staying
with us for over a year she was ready to pursue her dream, and to embrace it rather
than run. Like the line say life isn't what you're running from its what you're running
to that counts.
The other thing about these new venues for small independents is the movie people
and commercial people are looking through these sights as well and they will hire
the music, singers and lyrics they want direct, I tell you the big record companies
made themselves a lot of enemies over the past several years and like tour operators
they are in danger from musicians and corporations making deals direct on line,
The eventual changes will be good for musicians who will be heard and seen for their
own merit without having to sell their soul to the devil to get known.

Forgot to mention. Jesse Cottam tweeted me back today. He said his band would be coming east, in answer to my question.

Listening to Kris sing Heartless (that you posted, SleepinIn). How come I never get tired of this? Oh, yeah, because he never sings it the same way twice. I wonder if you guys ever do this, too -- about three or four bars in I said aloud, "Damn, he's good!" Laughing as I said it. I do that a lot.

Just noticed, in those videos Kris is wearing the shirt he wore in Worcester, that I was just talking about recently.

I just looked up the W Hotel where those performances were recorded, and I recognized it right away -- because the last time I was in SF I stayed at the Four Seasons and the view from my room was of the W Hotel! I hope Kris got to stay there because it looks really nice.

Oh, cool. Are you going to try and go see them?

I saw a twitpic today that mentioned that shirt. Something about sending it back to the Thrift shop. LOL. :) I have to admit I prefer the plaid. But whatever. :) Not my decision.

Jesse C. seems to have gone to Bieber's barber.

(Bieber's barber. Say that three times, fast.)

Yeah, if they come here I'd probably go to see them.

That was the shirt he was wearing when I met him. Surely you jest. :p

Um, no that was a really good looking shirt in real life, but maybe it loses something in photos/videos.

The girl in the photo with Jesse is playing his girlgriend in Amber Pacific's new video, I guess. He tweets he's "surrounded by tall girls in real life" also.

Jesse has looked better. I didn't even recognize him at first. I thought: who's that guy looking like a cross between Bieber and Adam. Ouch!

Andrew Cook is just really weird:

FF @alexwtrugs by Andrew Cook - TwitVid

And that twitvid made somebody I follow on twitter think that Andrew could join the IICD house. Well, I'm not sure that what he refering to in the vid, but I guess you never know.
