Funny Kris quote someone mentioned elsewhere:

The weird things you can remember from twitter. I think it was Aaron Spears (tour drummer) that asked him on behalf of a fan if he smelled like heaven. Kris’ reply (according to Aaron) was: “Only on Tuesdays.” lol

Ok, lots of posts! I'll have to catch up tomorrow. I just came back from my Matt Nathanson concert. It was awesome (you can never overuse that word!)!! Matt is not only a really great singer live, he's very generous and communicates very well with the audience. And he's hilarious. I loved him! I hope he continues to have the success he deserves because he's worked really heard. Anyway, enough about Matt.

The Teen Choice thing. Last year, Cook beat Archie, this year Archie beat Cook, so who knows next year what can happen. And it's the Teen Choice Awards. They vote Miley Cirus as their favorite singer (they better not bring her as a guest judge on AI, though nothing would surprise me anymore). And I feel kind of sad for the women who take the time to repeatedly vote for something that concerns their kids.

Very bad review of Kris in the New York Times, very good for Adam.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/11/arts/music/11idols.html?_r=2&hpw

I've become philosophical about reviews, but this one actually really upset me.
I think this was the paper that earlier compared Kris to Pat Boone. Possibly the same reviewer.

Saying Adam should have sung All These Things I've Done -- or would have done it better -- is ridiculous. Could Adam play electric guitar in the number too? I don't know. Basically I'm disgusted.

Glad you enjoyed Matt Nathanson, missaddicted. Local boy makes good. (from the town of Lexington, MA). You'll have to tell us about it. I really like his voice, and he seems like a funny guy.

This was his review on May 21st.

Kris Allen began the final sing-off on “American Idol” on Tuesday night driven by what appeared to be a combination of fear and good sense. He won the coin toss, and opted to let Adam Lambert perform first in each of the battle’s three rounds, knowing perfectly well that should the otherworldly Mr. Lambert follow him, all traces of the genial and flat Mr. Allen would be erased from the planet — and voters’ memories.

At the end of the second hour, after all the performances were complete, the judges were already writing Mr. Allen’s eulogy. “You should be very proud of what you’ve done in this competition,” Randy Jackson told him. “You’ve done an amazing job to end up where you are right now,” Paula Abdul said. Compare that faint-praise damnation with how the constitutionally fussy Simon Cowell celebrated Mr. Lambert’s season. “Doing a show like this,” he said, “you hope that you can find a worldwide star. I genuinely believe with all my heart that we have found that with you.”

And so, whether because of natural bearing or awareness of his surroundings, Mr. Allen was modest down to the very end of the Wednesday night results show, when he was crowned the winner. Perceived by many as an upset, it was actually an apt finish for a season, the show’s eighth, that privileged strenuous competence above all.

At best Mr. Allen is a harmless singer: he makes Kenny Loggins look tough. At worst he’s indefensible, utterly lacking in texture and range and interpretive imagination. His aw-shucks demeanor spills over to his performances, in which his chin jerks violently to the right every time he aims for a big note, as if his mouth were struggling to deliver what his brain is asking for.

Last week, in the episode that determined who would compete in the final showdown, Mr. Allen evoked two of the dullest successful bands in recent memory: OneRepublic (on “Apologize”) and the Fray (whose cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless” he conceptually pilfered). “Heartless” was effective, but was merely a brief flicker of flair after several weeks of airbrushing the life out of songs by Michael Jackson, the Beatles and others.

And yet Mr. Allen’s innocuousness proved no liability; he was never in the bottom two of the voting results, a feat matched only by Danny Gokey, the last singer eliminated before the final battle. (And as church-worship-leader contestants go, Mr. Gokey is far superior to Mr. Allen; Mr. Gokey’s bravura reading of Carrie Underwood's “Jesus, Take the Wheel” was one of this season’s best performances.)

This year, more than any other, there was frequent discussion of the contestants’ post-“Idol” careers, both because of a newly added fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi, with significant recent music industry experience, and because, as many nonwinners have made plain, you don’t need to win to capitalize on “Idol” exposure. The show, everyone now realizes, is in no small part an engaging advertisement for what might come next.

By that measure Mr. Allen had the obvious advantage: it is completely clear what sort of record he’ll make. His anti-style is the stuff of adult-contemporary radio and VH1 playlists: in addition to OneRepublic and the Fray, artists like Jason Mraz, Parachute, Ingrid Michaelson, Matt Nathanson, Mat Kearney, Colbie Caillat. In other words, the new soft rock, a post-Coldplay movement that eludes taste-maker taste but is embraced by broad swaths of listeners. The pairing of Mr. Allen with Keith Urban on Wednesday night didn’t make sense from a genre perspective, but their attitudes were in alignment: neither one’s singing could hurt a fly.
Mr. Allen’s denuded R&B was a comfortable fit on this season of “Idol,” which was largely driven by black music, never mind that only two African-American contestants made it to the Top 13. One, Lil Rounds, never evolved beyond a sound-alike retro snooze; the other, Jasmine Murray, was the most contemporary finalist, though she was undone by nerves.

The charming Anoop Desai fancied himself a new jack swing revivalist; too bad no one else did. Mr. Gokey sang muscular, inspirational, church-informed soul, something another contestant, Michael Sarver, attempted with far less success. Matt Giraud had a lovely falsetto and little sense of how to apply it. Blues-rock shaped the sound of Allison Iraheta and Alexis Grace. And Megan Joy Corkrey delivered wacky jazz riffs.

Almost none of this season’s eccentricity, though, made its way into Tuesday’s battle. After the ho-hum Jordin Sparks-Blake Lewis pairing in Season 6, this was the most anemic final competition in the show’s history — a new viewer tuning in would have been hard pressed to guess that it was the final showdown — and also the lowest rated.

In the first round Mr. Lambert’s “Mad World” was dutifully restrained, only a faint tracing of his impressive rendition of the song earlier in the season. Mr. Allen’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” was a slight improvement on his initial version, but still fundamentally limp, without an ounce of the original’s pathos.

The songs in the second round were selected by the creator of “Idol,” Simon Fuller, who burdened the contestants with politics they couldn’t carry. Mr. Allen drew Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” a protest song that he sapped of its anguish. Worse, he didn’t bother with an interpretation; the original has always felt definitive but has ample room for melodic improvisation, which Mr. Allen didn’t use. Mr. Lambert tried harder with his assignment, Sam Cooke’s civil-rights anthem “A Change Is Gonna Come.” In his fashion he transformed it into ecstatic theater, while suffocating its existential heft.

Finally both contestants sparred fruitlessly with “No Boundaries,” a genuinely unpleasant spatter of treacle written by Cathy Dennis, Mitch Allan and Ms. DioGuardi. A studio recording of it is Mr. Allen’s first cash-in single, already available on iTunes.

Losing spared Mr. Lambert this particular indignity and probably did no damage to his future prospects as a recording artist. Mr. Jackson once suggested that Mr. Lambert could make a record like one by the operatic emo band My Chemical Romance, but that presumes an emotional depth that he never displayed. Performative fireworks aside, Mr. Lambert does not seem to be a deep thinker, and his best appearances this season were also his most straightforward, his exceptional voice notwithstanding. (There’s no way, and little reason, to cover up an instrument so fascinating and dexterous.)

Instead the theatrically trained Mr. Lambert was often saddled by muddled, conflicting signifiers. His reference points came in flurries: David Bowie and Freddie Mercury and Led Zeppelin, glam and goth and Broadway. His hairstyle changed by the week. His rock moves were vivid, but rarely completely convincing, the results-night performance with Kiss a notable exception. He only truly hit his stride toward the end of the season, leaving bizarre versions of “Ring of Fire” and “Play That Funky Music” and more in his wake. Those songs got him noticed, but they were too odd to sustain him.

That he shined on softer material — “Mad World,” “Feeling Good,” “One” — demonstrates a little-acknowledged truth about Mr. Lambert. Histrionics aside, he’s just an old-fashioned song-and-dance man, without the dancing. A lifetime in and around musical theater will do that to you. “Idol” wanted him to be something more, and he may well have wanted that for himself. So if he was hiding something, it wasn’t his sexual preference, it was his conservatism. If only he had let America see the real him.

So Danny Gokey's Jesus Take The Wheel was one of the season's best performances?

Keep smiling, Kris, my boy.

Aww, ross, don't be upset about the review. The guy clearly doesn't like Kris. But yeah, saying that Adam should have done Kris' song is stupid.

Saying that Matt Nathanson is funny is an understatement. He's absolutely hilarious. And his voice is just as good live as on the recording. And just like Kris, he's totally inside the music. Nothing contrived or fake about him at all. It was an amazing show. I loved the songs and the banter. I just posted my review on another board, I'll copy it here, I'll put it in a separate post.

Oh, and the Kris performance from the tour that comes from with the iTunes pass is downloading right now. I'll tell you in a few minute what it is! I'm excited!

It's Bright Lights!!! Awesome! Pretty good video quality and amazing sound! Great closeup of the guitar solo. And again, his energy his totally contagious, I couldn't help but get up and dance during the song!

I also have a new autographed mini photo booklet. Pretty useless, but hey, it's still something Kris!

Have you seen Michael Slezak's review of the tour? I read it today on EW.com. He was very positive for Matt, Allison, Adam and Kris of course.

My Matt N. review:

I was really expecting to love him live and my high expectations were absolutely met. Great voice, amazing presence and he's hilarious, so what's not to love!

The show was in a small room of a club. It was a bit of a weird setting since there were tables with chairs but there was this empty space in front of the stage that people were too shy to fill in since they didn't know if they could stand up. Some people ended up sitting on the floor during the first part. Funny story about that later. I was sitting in the first row of chairs not far from the stage and I had a great view.

The opening act was a guy calling himself Chasing Bright Lights. From his accent when he spoke French, I would say he's definitely from Québec. He was ok, interesting voice, but not much more going on I would say. Matt could show him a thing or two about interaction with the audience. He had his eyes closed during all his songs and he had that faux-affected look on his face that kind of bothered me. Moving on.

Matt came in on stage with his three musicians and they played for more than an hour and a half. It was a blast. The set list is below. I loved his set list, I couldn't have asked for better. His voice sounded amazing. His banter was hilarious as I was expecting. He talked to us about his past as a prostitute (as a joke of course!), he managed to diss the tweens (no ****ing tweens here tonight, right?) and Jack Johnson (yay, Matt!). He admitted to watching the Disney Channel, hence his obsession with Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. He complained about the pissed off people at the border. He told us he couldn't bring all his props since this was a small club show, props that included a bengale tiger, a unicorn for his guitar player and something that he could twirl on in his underpants like the Cirque du Soleil, lol. He tried to sing some Guns'n'Roses and was pissed at us when everyone started singing Paradise City after him, but wouldn't sing Jessie's Girl a few minutes before! He tried to rap on that 8 mile song by Eminen and did a more or less successful impression of Enrique Iglesias singing Escape (since he thinks that Gone, I believe, sounds like Escape, which no). Finally, he told us not to buy his CDs and t-shirts at the merchandise booth since they would go spend all the money at the strippers' club. Anyway, I either had a silly smile on my face during his songs or I was laughing my head off.

Oh, I was about to forget the funny story about the sitting/standing arrangement. After the third song, a girl put her hand in the air and told him that she was unhappy to sit on the floor and wanted to dance but that she didn't want to disrespect the others sitting behind her. He was like "WTF? What do you want me to do", but definitely with an amused looked on his face. He had a pretty good idea, he told the people who wanted to stand to go on one side of the stage and the others on the other. Which is what happened for the rest of the show. Good job, Matt! Then, another girl put her hand up to suggest her idea and Matt was like "So, this is how you roll in Canada, we could spend a decade doing this!".

Here's the setlist (I would hope in the correct order):
1. To the Beat of Our Noisy Hearts
2. Fall to Pieces
3. Falling Apart
4. Still
5. Princess (with Jessie's Girl)
6. Laid
7. All We Are
8. Curve of the Earth
9. Pretty the World
10. Car Crash
11. Gone
12. Angel
13. I Saw
14. Wedding Dress
15. Detroit Waves
16. Come On Get Higher
Encores:
17. Suspended
18. Answering Machine (I was so happy I got "my" Answering Machine, I almost thought he wouldn't do it!)

I guess my only complaint would be his guitar player's backup vocals. I just don't think he sounds that good. He especially ruins a few songs for me on his live sessions he did for iTunes.

He said it was his first show as a headliner in Montréal and I definitely hope it wasn't his last!

Thanks for that recap, missaddicted! That sounds like a great show. How were the tickets sold? Did it sell out really fast. It's such a small venue, and he's popular. He sounds hilarious. I even laughed just reading the recap. Glad he sounded good live, too. Hope I can see him sometime. Feel free to tell anything else you remember if it comes to you.

Aww, ross, don't be upset about the review. The guy clearly doesn't like Kris. But yeah, saying that Adam should have done Kris' song is stupid.

Re that review, I always suspected that people who don't like Kris in a big way, really don't like the whole style of singing or performers he represents. Or even the laid back style of these people, as people. One time I asked a friend who finds Kris "boring," what she thought of Matt Nathanson. "Boring." Jason Mraz? "Oh my God, so boring."

I thought this was hilarious! It had nothing to do with Kris per se.

But anyhow, that's why I copied the other (earlier) piece. The guy seems to compare Kris with some great people, as if this is a bad thing?

What bugged me: the NYTimes is read all across the country and the world, so this kind of thing can hurt a performer, I think. It's almost irresponsible. But it's the real world. If you want to play the game, it's tough game.

Speaking of that, have you been reading some of the stuff about Adam and his fans? Strange situation. I don't really understand it, I'm sure it's more than meets the eye.

I think he either has to do what the others do, come out and sign autographs every time, or else never do it, and make it clear he's never going to do it. Because when he unintentionally acts hard to get, or hard to meet, coming out sometimes and not other times, it's like teasing these people. It's just going to make them scream more for him, wait longer, whatever. Then when he does appear, it seems so much more important than it is. "Oh, my God, Adam came out!" The whole thing is ridiculous.

As for Adam needing to save his voice or his being exhausted, I don't know if these are just stories, or true. If it's true, he only does 5 numbers in the show. How could he do a concert on his own for an hour or more? How exhausting would that be, or what would that do to his voice? Of course it's always good to remember these are just novices, even him.

Did you watch the Bright Lights video, ross? I know it's been put on youtube, but I don't have the link handy.

Matt: the place was pretty small (capacity of 300), but I'm not sure it was even sold out. Some people were buying tickets right there at the door. I haven't heard his song on the radio here though. He said it was playing on the radio in Montréal, but maybe only at one radio station or two.

One time I asked a friend who finds Kris "boring," what she thought of Matt Nathanson. "Boring." Jason Mraz? "Oh my God, so boring."

To each his own, I guess! I don't find anything boring about any of these three fine gentlemen.

About Adam: the whole thing is a bit weird, but I haven't read a lot about it, and don't really care to. It's hard to blame him though with all the crazies out there.

And I don't think it's totally about the number of songs they perform. They're travelling all the time, Kradison are going all over the place to write/record, they have media engagements, especially these three and they have to perform, sign autographs, take pictures. I know I would be completely exhausted!

I did get Oliver's reply in my regular messages. I also got a couple of others that way. Wonder why some, not others? (BTW, people have been saying Kris has been getting great replies to his NASDAQ tweet. How do you read the replies people have been tweeting to Kris? Or to anybody? I don't know that was possible.)
Ross if you put in @Krisallen4real in the twitter search field it will bring up a listing of all the replies to him or wait...

here's another link even easier. And you can use it for other searches - just change what you're looking for.

krisallen4real - Twitter Search

Thanks for the Twist moment. Kris is in that magazine, I think, and others like that. I check them out at the store, when I can, but I can't really check out fan-girl mags without looking like a pervert. Ha. So, from what I've seen, Kris is featured a lot. Not Adam. That is why it was with a heavy heart that I read this morning that Adam beat Kris for the Teen Choice Award.
And I can't look at the magazines without looking like an idiot. Youtubes however are for everyone! lol - I didn't mind that Adam beat Kris. I actually don't think Kris cares about things like that all that much. I mean he'd probably like to win.. care about winning? Not so much. I never voted in that.. I am not a teen. Couldn't make myself care. :) Sorry Kris.

Of course, I'm pretty sure the Adam frauen made this happen. Here it is, the frauen in action. Or maybe they're teens. Very organized teens.
Very, very organized. That's motivated all right. It's too bad Adam couldn't be at the awards after all that.

It was awesome (you can never overuse that word!)!!
Awesome! Awesome lives :)

Oh, I was about to forget the funny story about the sitting/standing arrangement. After the third song, a girl put her hand in the air and told him that she was unhappy to sit on the floor and wanted to dance but that she didn't want to disrespect the others sitting behind her. Then, another girl put her hand up to suggest her idea and Matt was like "So, this is how you roll in Canada, we could spend a decade doing this!".
Okay, this made my day! And in a day with a pretty damn awesome version of Bright lights
Bright Lights
(and a cute little autographed tour book full of spiffy looking pictures) that's pretty freaking good. I can just picture you all sitting there deciding where to stand and sit. Matt Nathanson is hilarious. I downloaded that CHUM interview he did and I still listen to it. I think I love him. Can we hook him up with Kris somehow? :) Did he tour with Pink at one point? I think I remember seeing his picture with Suzie McNeil on the tour bus or something.

I can't bring myself to care about reviews from people who don't like Kris's style of music. I just chalk it up to differing tastes and let it go. All reviews have some sort of bias - you just figure out the bias and align your self that way. I mean I happen to like the artists that he disses so that tells me that his views on music aren't similar to mine anyway.

The Adam thing - I think it might be easier for Adam if he did say that he wasn't going to come out. Fewer recriminations from the peanut gallery. He is after all doing actual meet and greets inside at the arenas. These kids are worked hard.

And Ross since the MTV interview with Jim Cantilano is up please go watch it (no pressure or anything - lol) and then give us a play by play. Cause I need to know.. *whine*

are my posts getting long or what? lol From a line to a novel..

This is a cute fan encounter

Has it sunk in for Kris that he is the current American Idol? Apparently not, lol (his vlog from the set of GMA):

Kris Allen single title w/ Lineup copy

David Cook sang on stage with Our Lady Peace at one of their concerts last night (in Dallas I believe). It appeared to be planned in advance since David had his guitar, but still, I'm sure it must have been overwhelming and incredible to perform with his favorite band evah! There's a video, but the quality is atrocious. Maybe I'll post something if a better video turns up.

Hahaha...Kris. Calling David Cook the American Idol. He'd better get used to it soon, he only has about nine months left. Ha.

I just finished reading that recap from Baltimore. That was great. Did you happen to read the one on mj's blog that was written by the girl who gave him that Mickey Mouse doll? It was fun to get a different perspective on the same events.

I can't believe Kris is wearing her necklace. I can see why he would. It's a perfect gift for him. The peace sign/guitar pick.

I felt slightly bad when I read that, though. Here's why. There's a young guy who follows me (and vice versa) on twitter who also gave Kris a necklace. He told me it's green stones or beads, and some silver. He's from Texas, his name's Jason. He also did a recap on mj's blog, you may remember. So he tweeted me about this necklace (that Kris doesn't wear): "I hope he wears it on the tour bus." Aww. I felt kinda bad for him.

Speaking of twitter, any word about that Jason Negron interview with Kris? I'm following him on twitter just for news of that. I was pretty sure he tweeted he had done it and it would be "up" or something. Somewhere.

When you guys mention this autographed tour book is this something you have to print yourself from the computer? I don't get it.

Thanks for that video of Bright Lights. I kind of wish they didn't mute the audience, or whatever it is they do, sound-wise. It's like watching AI. I would just as soon hear them screaming/cheering, since they always seem to, when I hear the cellcast. (By the way, is there a cellcast any more?) (When I went over there to look for the cellcast, this was on Rickey's website.)

Jim Cantiello? Okay, I'll go look for that on MTV...

Oh I found one part Ross! yay! Happy.

YouTube - Kris Allen: Adam Lambert's New Music Is 'Not In The Box'

and yeah the tour book is weird. Itunes should sell songs. Itunes passes should give me songs. :) It is natural type pictures though - they aren't staged like the Itunes singles photos. So it's all good - for a non-song. At least it came with music.

Maybe the Negron guy just said that and wasn't serious. Who knows. I haven't seen anything either.

There was a cellcast - it's just hard to find - the sound was horrible tonight - so no real loss. Krisallennation usually puts Ricky up on their blog, it might be easier to find that way.

Have you ever read Adam's brother's blog. I think he's hilarious. Clearly not a fan of Michael Sarver - but he didn't really talk about the other Idols just about the experience of going to the concert as the brother of Adam. Must be an odd experience all by itself.

On Aug. 9 Negron tweeted: "Check out my Interview with #American Idols #Kris Allen coming tomorrow." That sounds legit. Wonder if it's out there somewhere in cyberspace?

And I don't think it's totally about the number of songs they perform. They're travelling all the time, Kradison are going all over the place to write/record, they have media engagements, especially these three and they have to perform, sign autographs, take pictures. Good point. He does have a lot to do besides tour. I also think he's not necessarily someone who handles the craziness well. It seems to get on his nerves a lot.

SleepinIn, someone on mj's blog mentioned a way for Canadians to see MTV stuff. It's in the comments section under the link to Kris's in iterview with Cantiello. I can't find the post at the moment.

Thanks Missaddicted - and David Cook! Maybe Adam will blog too. :)

Yeah the link is harder to find on Rickey's site - it's usually down the page a bit. On Krisallennation I think they just embed Rickey's blog tv on their front page. It's easier to find there. I didn't listen really at all tonight - just a bit of ANS (sound was SO bad) :)
