LOL! I can't even believe that the Claymates are still going that strong. And they're actually a proof that a core dedicated fanbase is not sufficient for an artist to really have mainstream success, though it's probably necessary as
SleepinIn said. Necessary, but not sufficient. (And it's not that Clay is a total failure, he's probably still having some success on Broadway or something, but he's not really mainstream anymore.)
I really think an artist needs to have casual fans to be popular. I mean, I buy a lot of music, and see probably more live shows that the average person, but I'm not really invested in a lot of artists. And even those I'm invested in, I can't say that I'm spending time calling radio, voting for things online and doing things like that. But I'm 100% sure that casual fans are necessary for an artist to become popular, even those coming from AI. Adam (and Kris too of course) will need to reach those casual fans just the same as those who have preceeded him.
