KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CP) - The main coalition airbase in Kandahar has apparently been hit by three mortar rounds.

Three distinct explosions were heard around 3 a.m. local time Tuesday and U.S. helicopter gunships were scrambled. There has been no immediate comment from military officials. There do not appear to have been any casualties, but this could not immediately be confirmed.

The mortars struck in the northwest area of the base.

It is the first time since last November that the base has been attacked.

There are currently 2,200 Canadian troops based in Kandahar.
