Will someone from the "one tier only" viewpoint tell me what is wrong with using private facilities, as long as they are paid through the public system? We need more facilities if we are to shorten wait times.

The main problem most of the one tier supporters have is where the private clinics/hospitals are going to get their profit from if they're getting paid the same amount for the care they give as govermental health care? I mean their not in it to feel good here.

Are we going to get worse servise from them?

Are they going to start charging extra for things that we aren't now paying for,(like oh clean sheets)?

Are they going to, basically, going to be away for the rich to bypass the lines because the poor and middle class can't pay for all the 'extra' that the clinics are charging?

These are the things are what worry us. Not to say our system is perfect by a long shot but it is fixable. The step would be getting the MBAs out of the jobs in healthcare they have no business being in and put them where they'll actually do some good.

With respect, it would make no business sense for the private operators to give service as you have indicated. To do this would simply decrease their business.

But you are not suggesting that our public hospitals are operating at a deficit, are you? If you are, and if they indeed are operating at a deficit, then our health care costs will continue to spiral out of control.

To be blunt, there are two things we cannot continue to do. The first is to continue to throw money at a problem, with the most money going to wages. For instance, during the last threatened nurses strike in Alberta, virtually the entire increase in budget went to wages, with nary a new bed opened. Secondly, we cannot continue to have longer and longer waiting lists. People are, if not dying in line, becoming sicker in line, which may ultimately lead to a quicker death. This all seems to be very stupid when there are other outlets available for use, if only we would get over the myth that privitization is a bad thing.

I also have another question. If the proponents of public only health care are positive this is the only way to go, why do they seem to see nothing wrong with denists, physiotherapists, diagnostic clinics, optomotrists, etc. Last time I checked the vast majority of these services were provided by private operators and no one has mentioned dirty sheets, or poor service. In fact, just the opposite, they have to provide good service or they will go out of business.
