At the moment it is the ascent of China as the engine of global economics that is putting everyone else on tilt.

There is nothing that anyone can do to make Chinese steel more expensive. Given the efficiencies of scale they enjoy they can produce anything that we can produce and do it at a fraction of the price.

Introducing taxes on Canadian and Mexican metals in order to fight chinese dumping is just one more bizzarro move from the bizzarro whitehouse.

Hi! Hoid

Tariffs are surely contributing to inflation and that is what the U.S. needs to Inflate itself out of debt, by lowering the dollar value. It also needs "Inflation" to justify the Federal Reserve wanting to raise interest rates.

Canada's not going about it the right way though. Counter-intuitively, Canada should be strategically imposing export tariffs on certain Canadian exports to the US. Among the one's I'd include would be alcohol, tobacco, steel, meat, dairy, and eggs (though granted we don't trade much in some of these as it is, they'd still have a symbolic effect).

We could consider an export tariff on watts and fuel too.

Making Canadian products more expensive is a no-win strategy. We are in a competitive world market where buyers can always find something cheaper elsewhere.

So what should Trudeau have done when Pence demanded a 5 year sunset clause or there will be no more talks ?

Should Trudeau have just said "Yes Massa", bent over and pulled his pants down around his ankles ?

Both sides said they were real close on closing the deal in principle until they ran into the foreign auto parts import and the Sunset clause stumbling block, Mexico said they were in an agreement with Japan on protecting their interest and Canada is against the Sunset clause. Pretty easy to resolve IMO
