A 17-year-old Indian girl who was gang-raped killed herself after police pressured her to drop the case and marry one of her attackers, police and a relative said on Thursday.

The latest case, in the Patiala region in the Punjab, has again shone the spotlight on the police's handling of sex crimes.

The announcement came a day after the government said it had launched a judicial probe into the attack on the 23-year-old student who was dramatically airlifted to Singapore from a hospital in New Delhi late on Wednesday.

Doctors in Singapore were battling on Thursday to save her life following the horrific injuries she sustained.

Her drunken attackers, joyriding in a bus, raped the student and then assaulted her with an iron bar. The savage gang rape sparked some of New Delhi's largest mass protests in decades.

Women's Rights in India is a Myth. When a husband wants a divorce he just throws the wife out. She has no rights for visitation, support or any other of what we regard as trhe "Basic Human Dignity's." She is an out cast forever. Her pleas are even unheard in that nations Courts.

First of all this is a human problem not just confined to India. In fact it has implications
right here in Canada. Yes I think these situations are starting to spark the "I have had
enough" syndrome.
With the changing world in India, such as the awakening of an industrial revolution the
penchant for change is coming rapidly. Women are now standing up and demanding
rights. This was the case in Canada a little over a hundred years ago when women fought
for and won the right to vote and be recognized as persons under the law.
In this country we see acts like this in minority communities every day not just the Indo
Canadian community either. As a nation we have to ensure these kinds of violent acts are
severely punished to send the right message.
In India and in Pakistan violent acts are being put in the spotlight and governments are being
forced to respond. Actually social media is playing a positive role here exposing the creeps
for who they are and forcing mainstream media to open discussions that lead to legal action
long overdue. yes there is some expectation that the laws and social conditions will change
in India and other parts of the third world.

A 20-year-old woman has been left fighting for her life in hospital today after a court in India ordered her to be gang-raped for having an affair with a youth from another village.

The brutal punishment was allegedly carried out by the very same ‘court’ which found her guilty in a village near Suri in west Bengal state, 150 miles from Kolkata, police said.

Police said that all 13 accused men - ten of whom made up the court - have since been arrested for rape. Among them is the village headman.

Happens in the majority community too, so you might want to dial down the self-righteousness a notch.

Many tragedies exist in India. The widows are particularly mistreated. India has no welfare infrastructure, so old widowed woman are dumped and left to die at a rate that boggles the mind. Since women are given to the highest bidder, husbands are often much older. Many widows survive by begging. Another aspect of India are the millions of orphans!! Most are abandoned by their parents, child labour and trafficking is a serious problem there. Third world country still have many decades before they attain some vestige of control on the abuse of their citizens.

These are communities within communities,people withi communities design their own programs
Of course their are the higher risk commercial sex workers which need assistance from bigger communities and as I understand their are community partnerships making this happen
There will always be bad johns

Minimizing opportunities is part of community iniatives
