TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) - Camden has been named the nation's most-dangerous city, snatching the top spot from Detroit, according to a company's annual ranking based on crime statistics. Officials in Camden, which was ranked third last year, downplayed the dubious designation Sunday, saying many steps have already been taken to reduce crime in the city.

"We must give our people jobs, training and opportunity," said City Councilman Ali Sloan-El, who pointed out that Camden's poverty is an important contributing factor to its high crime rate. Atlanta, Georgia, St. Louis, Missouri, and Gary, Indiana, rounded out the top five in the most dangerous city rankings, which was to be released Monday by Morgan Quitno Corp. The company publishes "City Crime Rankings," an annual reference book that will be published next month. Detroit fell to second in this year's list.

However, company president Scott Morgan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in its Sunday edition that he had been unaware that St. Louis police omitted 5,760 crimes from their 2003 crime data. Provided with the correct data, Morgan found that St. Louis would have switched places with Atlanta. The news wasn't all bleak for New Jersey. The state's Brick Township was rated the second-safest city for the third straight year, behind only Newton, Massachusetts, while the Garden State's Dover Township was ranked tenth. The other communities in the top five were Amherst, N.Y., which had been ranked as the safest city for the past four years, followed by Mission Viejo, California, and Clarkstown, New York.

The rankings look at the rate for six crime categories: Murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft. It compares 350 cities with populations of 75,000 or more that reported crime data to the FBI. Final 2003 statistics, released by the FBI in October, were used to determine the rankings.

Within arms reach of the new baby..
You know. I"ve never been to Camden, but I have been to Detroit, and damn, that was a scary city. There's this tension in the air that is palpable, the people seriously have this suspicious look in their eyes, like they're just waiting for someone to pull a knife and then they'll pull their gun.

I will never go back to Detroit. But Clarkstown, here I come! :)

I am a 23 year old white girl with a love for music. I have ventured into the lovely city of camden at least 50 times to see a concert at one of their two venues. I live 40 miles outside of camden and know the area well. I find that camden is one of the easiest cities to find, get to, get into, accidently get stuck in, and get lost in. I have also found that it is the hardest city to get out of. I have no fear of continuing my visits to camden, but I will deffinetly say that some of the wierdest and scariest moments of my life have happened there, but also some of my best...

How the heck did Gary,Indiana get on that list? Isn't that Music Man territory? With the exception of Detroit,I'd have no fear of visiting of those so called most dangerous cities.

thank you moghrabi, that is very kind of you. and to missle.... I suppose you have never been to gary, indiana , but it is not a nice place at all. It is the music home of the Jacksons but that is pretty much it. It is right out side of chicago and it is the ugliest, dirtiest place i have visited. i don't recomend going, but if you are ever driving from Jersey to Chicago you will venture right through it.

Home of The Jacksons! Yuck! Plenty of reasons there to avoid that city and that's as good a explanation for the increased crime rate as any.

I'm from Detroit and it's a pretty good city. Most of the murders and robbery are drug related. If you aren't slanging then you should be alright. And a lot of the aggravated assault is gang related.

What I'm trying to say is Detroit is as safe as any city in America. All the crime that's happens, occurs to "bad" people. If you aren't involed in any of those activities then you'll be ok.

That's a good point! When you come right down to it,with all the people packing heat down there,it is a small wonder the murder rate isn't 10 times as high. I always figured murder is so common there,it hardly rates a mention in the news.
