Eating tainted wonton soup put a Calgary woman in a coma and hospitalized her for months, a more than $2-million lawsuit claims.
A statement of claim filed on behalf of Nicole Laurin says the real estate agent continues to have trouble doing her job almost two years after she became ill.
The court document says Laurin purchased wonton soup at the Saigon Bistro on Oct. 29, 2014.
"Laurin consumed the wonton soup and subsequently became very ill, suffering several abdominal cramps over several days, after which she became unconscious, or comatose," the claim says.
It says Laurin had to be taken to the hospital "where she was forced to remain for several months."
Once hospitalized she underwent "extensive surgeries" and was in a coma for an unspecified period of time.
As a result of the food poisoning, Laurin "suffered from and continues to suffer from chronic pain."
She also "had and continues to have reduced and limited movement and flexibility throughout the body including having to use a wheelchair."
The claim names the restaurant as well as the butcher shop, Wai Hing Meat Shop, where the wontons were allegedly prepared.
The lawsuit also seeks potential damages from the unidentified processing plant from where the food originated.
Among the allegations of negligence are that the restaurant failed to cook the soup properly, or failed to ensure the soup "had not been kept for such a time as to become infected and unfit for human consumption."
The meat shop was negligent in "failing to properly train the management and employees in the proper butchering of meat and cleanliness, food preparation and storage techniques required," it states.
Laurin is seeking total damages of $2.37 million, including $1.5 million in past and future lost income.
Statements of defence to the unproven allegations have not been filed.
