Bush's AIDS policy comes under attack

A United States congresswoman has attacked President George W Bush's AIDS policies.

Democrat congresswomen Barbara Lee says the White House's focus on abstinence is undermining attempts to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

She told the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok that women and girls often do not have the choice to abstain until marriage.

She says fundamentalist Christians are driving the abstinence agenda.

The director general of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Steven Sinding, says the US has got it wrong.

He said the Bush administration faced "enormous pressure" to play down the importance of condoms from its "own right wing".

The administration has a stipulation that 30% of US anti-Aids funds go through faith-based organisations.

"That means that upwards of 30 per cent of money will go to organisations which actively denigrate condoms, or that don't advocate them," he said.

"Evidence from India, Thailand and Cambodia shows that these restrictions have already undermined promising interventions," said Alice Miller, Assistant Professor of Clinical Public Health at Columbia University. "In Cambodia, for example, NGOs discontinued plans to provide English-language classes -- which could provide a path out of sex work -- for fear that they would be seen as 'promoting prostitution.'"

now this concerns me. Literacy programs are not aids programs. Am I missing something?

Your not missing anything. Neither are the NGOs. The message being sent is loud and clear...defy George Bush's religious agenda and you will lose your funding.

But literacy programs and aids programs are not the same thing. The funding was being restricted for aids programs wasn't it?

The literacy programs deal with prostitutes though. The idea is to get them reading and writing so they can do something else. Most of them can't go home to their families. Most of them have never learned to read and write.

In some of the programs, part of the education is using condoms, as well. It's kind of an attempt to keep them alive until they finish school.

I understand that and don't get me wrong, I don't support this either. I was just hoping it isn't as extreme as it sounds. But it's late, and articulation doesn't seem to be a stong point right now.

It is even more extreme than it sounds. Some are estimating that Bush's policies will kill up to two million people before he leaves office.

He can't do what he wants, there are repercussions. The term they use now is "blowback". It basically means that if screw enough people over for long enough that they will fight back in whatever way they can. You are already living with the results of a lot of that down there in the USA.

Faith based eh?

Many of his supporters seem to be.

As far as Rev hiding goes, you might want to look @ the introduction posts from earlier today.

Like he can't have 2 or more accounts, he's a mod.

Rev sent me a PM. He might check in sometimes, but he's basically gone. He said he was fed up with, "Morons with blue balls hunting him."
