The message I get from all this is that the Bushites can't see what all the fuss is about. They can't see past their own dogma. If I'm wrong, then the only other conclusion you could draw is that they just don't care what anyone else thinks. That harkens back to the "You're either with us or against us" comment. U.S. politics seems to have descended into a 'black hat - white hat' mentality. There is no gray area - no middle ground. People like us wouldn't fit very well into their pidgeon holes.

That is where I think they're coming from. There is no way that they are so inept as to not realize the reaction this would cause. I think these appointments have two very definite political goals...to ensure that US policy is pushed internationally; and to stir up anti-UN, anti-World Bank, anti-multilateralist sentiment domestically.

I don't think it will work internationally. I think the international community has had enough of this crap and that Bush will find himself isolated and compartmentalized very quickly. He will get help when it suits Europe, but they will increasingly dictate the terms of that help and there will be no help if things aren't for their benefit.

It will likely work domestically though, giving Bush somebody to blame for all the problems that his policies have brought on the US and ensuring the next president is another neo-con hawk...maybe Jeb Bush. The US press will continue to spin thing in favour of Bush's policies and blame the rest of the world for the problems in trade for access and sound bites.

RE: Bush: Wolfowitz to Be

I was talking to a guy a little earlier tonight and he thinks that this will pretty much be the end of US influence in the World Bank/IMF and the UN. He kind of specializes in this stuff and he basically said that the US, not just George Bush, is pretty much done over these appointments...that the only influence they have now is negative. He figures two years for the damage to become apparent.

The really odd thing? He's usually a big believer in the US being able to weather almost any storm. His usual answer runs along the lines of "They're too big to hurt." Not this time though.

I believe your friend is right - but I think it's going to happen sooner than that, quite possibly this year. Everyone used to think (some still do) that General Motors is too big to fail but recent events have raised some serious concerns about its future viability. The old saying was that 'whatever is good for GM is good for America' - if that is true then if GM fails, so can America. Check out this story:

If the banks fail, do we get our houses?

This is getting more and more interesting all the time. I never realizedthat GM was in trouble.

So now we have peak oil, the housing bubble, the US debt and deficit, The US trade deficit, GM, and who knows what else going south.

On the political side we have massive resistance to an arrogant and hegemonic super-state that is insistent on building an empire, a coming economic power in China, another economic power emerging in the EU.

On the health side we have an AIDS pandemic in Africa and, to a lesser extent, Asia; we are overdue for a flu pandemic and some experts think it will be a doozy...similar to 1918.

On the environmental side we have global warming, massive pollution, species die-off at a rate unseen for millenia, thinning ozone, and air so thick with toxins that breathing can kill people on a bad day.

Think I'll have a beer.

Geez after reading that I think I will join you in that beer Rev! :drunken:

 You might want a few more after you read this interesting site
http://www.markswatson.com/Depression1.html
The first page is from March of last year, make sure you read all of his updates. If some of his ideas seem a bit wacked that's probably because they are, but a lot of his economic projections have been depressingly (pun intended) accurate.

Most of the saner economic musing can be found at this site: http://www.prudentbear.com/homepage.asp

The opposition won't be that obvious, Jay. It's the rumblings in the background you have to pay attention to. The EU can't block the nomination...it would pretty much be like the Rice nomination. So the leaders make the right diplomatic noises and the boys in the background plan how to shut Wolfie and Bolton and Bush down before they can do too much harm.

They know they are dealing with a second-term president and they know that he'll be a lame duck when the mid-terms roll around. It's all damage control until then.
