What a shame, its always amazing the wildlife and plant life you find in a bog, and the burns bog was well known. I wonder how the fire started? Especially considering how many developers wanted that land developed...

It should never be developed and putting a highway through it was not good. btw- I have been smellingit at my place almost since it started. I have seen deer, bears, small animals and loads of birds there. It is a nice place to take a stroll.

Hi Bev

Burns Bog fires have been a thing for as long as I can remember. It is a kind of peat bog and peat burns as well or better than coal. This fire may have started last year and smouldered underground all this time and popped up close to the surface where it burns faster and makes more smoke. It could go for years.

I heard on the news this morning that there was a report of an explosion before the fire was seen. I highly doubt it though, too much time has passed, too many people interviewed and the media didn't hear one word about it. Maybe it exploded when it ignited or reached surface, might never know.

I noticed alot of haze, when I was in Nanaimo over the weekend, I thought it was just "harmac" but as twinks pointed out , it was probally from the burning bog. Is that you mac? or harmac?

The police are denying that now. Even rumours that a house bordering had a meth lab that exploded. Maybe we will know soon.

But they way the Delta Police are so quiet and skirting around the question, makes me wonder what really started it. Sounds fishy to me. I think they know.

Burns Bog Fires

There are fires on Lulu Island, and the sky is opalescent
With the pearl and purple tinting from the smouldering of peat.
And the Dream Hills lift their summits in a sweeping, hazy crescent,
With the Capilano Canyon at their feet.

There are fires on Lulu Island, and the smoke, uplifting, lingers
In a faded scarf of fragrance as it creeps across the day,
And the Inlet and the Narrows blur beneath its silent fingers,
And the Canyon is enfolded in its grey.

From "The Ballad of Yaada", a legend of the Pacific Coast,
as published in "Flint and Feather" collected verse of
E. Pauline Johnson, second edition, printed 1913.

Hey that was a wonderful poem juan...juan have you heard of Patrick Lane, he lives here on the island. 8)

CUT-THROAT

A creek, brown water thick with spring run-off, and the trout

in the riffles come up out of the deep waters to feed. Cut-throat,

that red comma of blood, and the curl of thin water,

the elemental body, eating the eggs and larvae of insects

swept down from the banks high in the hills behind him.

When he was young he had read of a golden ring

found in the belly of a fish and standing there, so many years

later, remembering how he had thrown his wedding ring

into the same lake, he thought…what? That happiness eludes us

when we apprehend it, that the fallen world is the peculiar dialect

of the heart, that a ring flung out upon the waters will return

wearing the blood of angels in a choir of water? He

had fished there, long ago, with his young wife and

their first child. He had turned only once and saw her

pick up the baby and walk away into the willows,

her body and the body of his child

going away from him into the shade.

It is how the high waters talk to us in spring, how we cast out

with every hope imaginable, catching nothing, and casting again,

the line falling upon the waters and everything below the surface

sinking deeper, a silence waiting beyond the riffles of the creek

where it meets the lake, the good food come down from the hills.

For some reason I hadn't heard of him. That poem was a bit haunting but it caught my interest. I see our library has a copy or two. Shouldn't take more than a few days to get it. Cheers

I've put a hold on the book. There are forty people ahead of me but they have fifteen copies so it shouldn't take too long. Thanks
