Buck Owens Dies at 76

I don't know if there are any fans here, but he was one of my favorites.

Buck Owens, 76, one of country music's leading stars and a host of the long-running television variety show "Hee Haw," died March 25 at his home in Bakersfield, Calif.

He died in his sleep, and the cause was not immediately known. He was treated for cancer in 1993 and pneumonia in 1997, but in recent years he had been in good health and performed regularly at his Bakersfield nightclub.



By blending rock-and-roll rhythms with country harmonies, Mr. Owens created the distinctive "Bakersfield sound," which propelled him to enormous success. Between 1959 and 1974, he had 45 songs in the country Top 10 and 20 No. 1 hits, including "Act Naturally" (1963), "Love's Gonna Live Here" (1963), "Together Again" (1964), "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail" (1964) and "Waitin' in Your Welfare Line" (1966).

He was unquestionably the leading country music star of the 1960s, annually selling more than 1 million records. He performed more than 300 nights a year and appeared at Carnegie Hall and the White House. In the mid-1960s, he had 15 consecutive No. 1 country hits. As a patriotic gesture in the late 1960s, he began to perform with a red-white-and-blue guitar, which became a signature

While I am guilty of watching "Hee Haw" quite a few years ago, Buck Owens was not among my favorite singers. I wish him well.

I liked Hee Haw as a kid, he wasn't one of my favorites either, but outside of Hee Haw, he was amoung my favorite singer/song writers.

The only thing I know about Buck Owens is that he did the delightful video 'Bakersfield' with Dwight Yoakum. It was a funny video, and a catchy song, too.

I heard this last night on CBC radio about Buck Owens I was never a fan , I was listening to Randy Bachmans show, he has a wealth of storys about the history of popular music, Lorne Elliots MADLY OFF IN ALL DIRECTIONS preceeded it, it was recorded at the Decoast centre in Pictou NS last summer, one of his guests was a women called Nikki Payne she was the best comedian I have heard for a while, she has a lispe which she's worked in to her routine with genius, I laughed till I pissed myself.

I used to see Hee Haw all the time,and had liked both Buck Owens and Roy Clark until then. It used to be my wife's favourite program.

So, finally your guilt, and from your own lips, watching Hee Haw, do you think there is a statute of limitations for this particular crime, the fans of Hee Haw have a special place reserved in the country and western corner of hell where they must endure the perfomances of Mini Pearl and Little Jimmy Dickens for all eternity.
What pennance could exonerate you, I do not know, perhaps you could petition the pope for absolution or you could pay for a special dispensation, were I you I would hasten to do so for even ten minutes
in the proximity of the above mentioned artists is in itself agony beyond endurance.

At least two Canadians were prominent on that series: Geordie Tapp and Don Harron[1969 to 1986].Harron wrote many of the cornball skits used on the show...O CANADA [the shame]
