Bruce Willis 'stepping away' from acting after aphasia diagnosis

Bruce Willis is “stepping away” from acting as he battles aphasia — a neurological condition that leaves a person unable to communicate.
The Die Hard star’s daughter Rumer shared the news in an Instagram post on Wednesday morning.
“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” she wrote. “As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”

Rumer went on to add that the diagnosis presents a “really challenging time for our family.”
“We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him,” she continued. “As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”
The note was signed by his family, including his wife Emma Heming, his former partner Demi Moore, and his children Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn.
According to the Mayo Clinic, aphasia affects a person’s ability to speak, write and understand language and “typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury.”
Willis will appear in 10 upcoming films. In recent years, the actor has worked mainly in straight-to-VOD fare and earned his own category at the 42nd annual Razzie Awards.

Earlier this month, Moore, who was originally married to Willis from 1987 to 2000, paid tribute to her ex on his 67th birthday.
“Happy birthday, Bruce! Thankful for our blended family,” the 59-year-old actress shared on Instagram.

Willis, whose career started in the early 1980s with a role in Sidney Lumet’s The Verdict, is most famous for playing New York City cop John McClane in the successful Die Hard franchise. He also starred in television’s Moonlighting, opposite Cybill Shepherd, Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, Looper, which opened the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and played David Dunn in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy.
He’s been nominated for five Golden Globes (winning once for Moonlighting) and won two Emmys (for Moonlighting and a guest appearance on Friends).
The actor’s famous friends rallied behind him after the announcement with Jamie Lee Curtis commenting, “Grace and guts! Love to you all!” while actress Debi Mazar added, “Bruce has given us sooo much! What an amazing career. May he rest and recover.”
