The U.K. Sun exclusively reports British scientists have invented what’s called “a sugar bomb” to destroy cancer cells.

According to the report, cancerous tumors need food to spread so they respond by eating up the “sugar bomb” which contains a drug that detonates when medical personnel shine a light on it.

“The drug absorbs the energy from the light,” Edinburgh University researcher Sam Benson told the British tabloid.

“It uses the energy to weaponize the oxygen in the cells, killing them from within.”

So far, the “sugar bomb” treatment has only been used on the most common brain cancer, known as glioblastoma, and killed the tumor’s cells in seconds.

Nature Communications says the technique is being adapted to fight fat-or-protein-seeking cancers and breast, prostate and lung cancers could be fought by the same approach in the future.

The Brain Tumour Charity told the Sun it could be an “innovative new way to target aggressive cancer cells while sparing healthy cells”.
