Unfortunately, Canada is facing ancreasingly protectionist Fortress America on our Southern border too. At least the UK has a larger population and a higher population density to absorb the impact of Fortress Europe. Canada's small population and low population density combined with Canada's own protectionist tendencies even at the provincial level make us extremely vulnerable. Canada needs to find new trading partners even more than the UK does.

Canada's bizarre in that it only trades with one country.

Even though the UK has the EU - population 450 million (after Brexit in March) - on its doorstep still only a minority of UK trade is with the EU.

That's partially Canada's fault. While we can own rightly criticize the US for its protectionist leanings, Canada has historically been protectionist too even at the provincial level. Unfortunately Canadians do have a Fortress Canada mentality too.

The UK has traditionally been more free-trading si given EU protectionism, I can understand why the UK wants out.

In fact in one sense, Trump's protectionism could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Canada by forcing us to trade more freely with the rest of the world.
