MONTREAL - A man is in custody after his girlfriend was doused with hot concrete-cleaning acid, causing third-degree burns all over her body.

Nikolas Stefanos was to appear in court for a bail hearing Tuesday after Tanya St. Arnauld, 29, was attacked in the Montreal suburb of Longueuil.

The victim's brother, Maxime Gosselin, told QMI Agency the couple had been drinking with friends on Saturday evening and the attack happened after the neighbours left the apartment.

"They fought. He was jealous about her girlfriend's (male) friend who was there," said Gosselin.

He said Arnauld went across to a neighbour's place after her boyfriend began to vandalize the apartment.

"She told her to stay and that she would call the police, but (Arnauld) returned home to calm him down," said the brother.

A boiler that stored the acid was sitting at the top of the stairs, and the scalding substance was dumped on top of the woman, Gosselin said.

"(It was) thrown on her face, chest, everywhere," he said.

Arnauld ran to her neighbour's in a panic.

"She was screaming," her brother said. "She hid in the bathroom. As she rinsed her skin it melted, it literally fell off. She was suffering."

The woman was transported to a burn unit in Montreal with serious injuries.

"She's all wrapped up, she has no hair," said Gosselin. "She had acid in her eyes, above her breasts, her back, legs, and she has bruises and scratches."

The couple had fought often during their six months together, said Gosselin.

Police had not been able to interview Arnauld as of Tuesday due to her injuries.

MONTREAL - The brother of a woman severely burned in an acid attack is worried the suspect in the case could soon be a free man.

A judge will decide Friday whether to grant bail to Nikolas Stefanatos, arrested after Tanya St. Arnauld was doused with hot concrete cleaner following a violent argument the Montreal suburb of Longueuil.

The 29-year-old hairdresser is being kept in an induced coma after suffering third-degree burns over much of her body following the weekend attack.

A photograph taken by the family shows Arnauld covered head-to-toe in bandages with one tube up a nostril and another one down her throat. Her face is red and severely swollen.

Arnauld's brother, Maxime Gosselin, is livid about the bail hearing and the fact that a judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation.

"I find it appalling, disgusting, what happened to my little sister," Gosselin said. "They'll release him. When it's your lover who does that to you, it's not (treated) like other cases."

Gosselin said mental illness is no excuse for violence.

"If psychiatric problems become an excuse for everyone who commits a crime, everyone will end up in an asylum," Gosselin said.

"If you're criminal, take responsibility."

Stefanatos faces several charges including assault causing bodily harm.

Gosselin said his younger sister's condition is improving but that he's worried how she'll react when she wakes up and sees her disfigured body.

"My sister has no more hair," he said. "She is a hairdresser and that's her trademark. I can't wait for her to wake up but I don't want her to see all the damage."

This guy just makes me sick! No way should he enjoy freedom when he's done that to her, he needs to face the consequences of his actions. She'll be facing them for the rest of her life.

This scum should count his lucky stars that he'll end up being coddled by the justice system here in Canada. If he had done this in the ME, there would be a good chance he would end up having acid thrown all over him due to the "eye for an eye" system that they have.

I predict a slap on the wrist for his sentence, which is pretty pathetic. He deserves a looooong jail sentence for that heinous act.
