Boris Johnson told European leaders to end the 'collective whinge-o-rama' over Donald Trump's election as US president.
He said the Republican's emphatic victory over Hillary Clinton is a 'great opportunity for the UK' to build closer economic ties with America.
Mr Johnson, who championed the campaign to leave the EU, praised Mr Trump as a 'deal maker' who would be good for Britain as it seeks to agree new free trade deals after Brexit.
And turning to his European counterparts, whose response to Mr Trump's victory was notably colder in tone than Theresa May's warm congratulations, Mr Johnson told them to 'snap out of the doom and gloom about the result'.

Mr Johnson's comments come less than a year after he publicly condemned Mr Trump after the Republican claimed some parts of London were 'no-go areas' because of Muslim extremists.
He described Mr Trump, who had just announced his plan to ban Muslims from entering the US, as 'betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of President of the United States'.
In a remarkably strong public rebuke to Mr Trump, the then London Mayor added: 'The only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump.'
But Mr Johnson, who was appointed Foreign Secretary by Mrs May in July, performed a U-turn on his approach to Mr Trump after his shock election victory on Wednesday.

He was one of the first European foreign ministers to congratulate Mr Trump, telling the controversial billionaire that he is 'much looking forward to working with his administration on global stability and prosperity.'
Speaking on a whistle-stop tour of capitals in eastern Europe and the Balkans, Mr Johnson lashed out at European leaders for taking a more negative approach to Mr Trump's election.
He said: 'I would respectfully say to my beloved European friends and colleagues that it's time that we snapped out of the general doom and gloom about the result of this election and collective "whinge-o-rama" that seems to be going on in some places.'
Mr Johnson added: 'He is after all a deal maker. He wants to do a free trade deal with the UK.
'I believe that this is a great opportunity for us in the UK to build on that relationship with America that is of fundamental economic importance for us but also of great importance for stability and prosperity in the world.'
