Was Bob Marley a good musician, a good reggie player or just a criminal who smoked weed.

Me personally. I love Bob Marley and think he is one of the best reggie players in the world.

And Lakia, I have not. Sorry.

Bob Marley: Good Musician or Drug addict?

 Both

The same can be said about Edgar Allen Poe, Good writer, or Opium Addict? I guess there is a risk of delving into the different levels of consciousness. It'll pay off... if your lucky, but at what cost eh?

Both. But which one, to you would be more important if you looked back on him. The weed he used or his music. I think his music is more important in looking back on him.

Edgar Allen Poe was an opium addict??

I totally agree with you. The essence of Bob Marley was the music and lyrics he wrote. That's him. It's what he thought. It's what he believed in. To just look at the weed factor means you have completely missed the point.

And yes, Edgar Allen Poe was an opium addict.

Did you know that Lewis Carroll - the author that wrote Alice In Wonderland - was a huge LSD addict? It's funny knowing that because once you do it puts the whole eccentic story into a different light. The whole ' Drink Me' bottle and she gets real small, the caterpillar smoking opium on a huge overgrown mushroom to which he tells Alice to nibble on it and she gets even smaller ( i think), the Cheshire cat with the huge Cheshire grin that chuckled alot. The whole story is loaded with drug references! He should have just called it ' Alice and Her Fantastic Psychedelic Trip'

Lots of artists, writers, musical geniuses have gotten a bunch of their inspiration from the bottle or the needle.

Gave us wonderful work, then self-destructed. Too bad.

I don't think you can separate the smoke from the man when it comes to Marley. Sure was good.

Lenny Breau comes to mind. A guitar legend, fantastic musician. Did things with a guitar others only dreamed of. Drug addict. A lot of pain must go with the talent.

Go figure.

Ugg.

Sad but true, eh!

I adore Marley. When I'm having a bad day, I pop Legend into the CD player and it never fails to lift my mood.

I suspect that the weed was part of the rebel lifestyle for Marley. His songs are all protest songs ... he found joy and beauty and delight in the midst of some atrocious conditions. Always makes me think that if he can be joyful in those oppressive situations, I can surely be happy where I am. Plus it's just cool to listen to. ;)

I have a saying 'Buy the art, not the artist'. I don't have to agree with everything Bob did to appreciate the music. Same goes for Elvis, Bon Scott, Sid Vicious, Janis Joplin, John Belushi, Richard Pryor, etc.

I like reggae and ska when in the mood. I don't find Bob Marley exceptional as a reggae musician.. I like some of his music but find a lot a little unimaginative. I'd rather listen to the lesser knowns but this, at least for me, applies to most forms of music from blues to folk to rock, etc. Maybe the issue is 'too much' Marley like too much Bob Dylan or too much Gordon Lightfoot, etc. After a while they become like background musak. I enjoy listening to one of those CBC radio programs that delves into the history of a musical style, blows the dust off some long forgotten artist and reintroduces some lost gems.

Yeah Gordon Lightfoot isn't too bad.

I wouldn't give Marley the time of day. But his being a pothead has nothing to do with it. Most musicians tangle with drug abuse at some point. He is absolutely normal.
