Maybe we all need a reset. Someone can start with respect and either maintain it or lose it. The Police are Us & We are the Police. When Cell Phones first came out I hated them, & for the most part I still do, but in this current world they've become a necessary evil. In my current occupation it's my primary tool.

Does every Tom, Dick & Sally NEED a 5G Smartphone? Doesn't matter 'cuz we all have one, and every one of them seems to have a built in camera, video camera, & audio recording function. It's today's reality, & if you're going to do dumb shit, it'll eventually end up on social media whether it's picking your nose in traffic or kneeling on George Floyd's neck until he's dead.

The 'Bad Apples' in Law Enforcement need to be weeded out whether that's 1% or 40%, and the culture protecting the 'Bad Apples' has to change for the 99% or 60% that are left so what we're seeing in the picture above doesn't have to happen because Law Enforcement will become a respectable profession again because The Police are Us & We are the Police. It shouldn't be an Us vs Them perception from either side of the badge, & this will not happen until Good Cops stop covering up for Bad Cops. It's really that simple, but putting that into play isn't simple at all.

A culture shift needs to happen. Both inside & outside of Law Enforcement things need to change and better sooner than later 'cuz this shit's just going to fester until it's lanced. Police Unions need to be curtained, and personally I believe Police in the US need to be better paid so that they don't need second jobs as Mall Cops or Night Club Enforcers or Collection Agents or Criminals. If something is illegal or immoral for the General Public, then it should also be illegal or immoral for Law Enforcement to preform the same act. That's not a difficult concept but it's the basis of the Us vs Them mentality from both sides of the badge.

On the petty side of examples, if an Officer is legitimately responding to a crime in progress, then they can turn on the lights & noise and go through that red light...but if they're not responding to a crime in progress, & they turn on the lights & noise and go through that red light, & then turn it all off and go for lunch...then they get a spanking just like we all do, 'cuz The Police are Us & We are the Police. This can be taken along the scale from this end to assaulting or murdering those they're sworn to protect & serve (or is it serve & protect? Damn Dyslexia). We all are accountable and we all follow the same rules, and we all get along & what we currently have just becomes a dirty page in our history that our Grandchildren's Grandchildren just won't even be able to fathom let alone understand.

Answer ain't all that tough.

Militarize the police.

Hint: giving them big, boomy toys ain't "militarizing." Giving them structure and discipline is.

Maybe the larger problem is that there are simply too many police forces. Almost every city has its own and some provinces have their own as well, plus the federal forces. In the US it is even worse with small towns having their own police farce.Way too much of the available money is being eaten up by administrators and other hangers on and not enough put to boots on the ground.

That's so common it has a name. . . "Boots to suits ratio."

That's part of my "militarize the police" idea. The military has standardization and unity of command. At a minimum, the certifying authority for cops should be national, or at least state, with the exclusive authority to train and license every cop in the country/state, from Big City PD to the Podunk Marshal's only part-time deputy.

It would also resolve the problem of "gypsy cops," who upon being fired or resigning under pressure, merely move two towns over and set up shop again.

I like the idea of Police 'self-insuring' like Nurses on the south side of the US/Canada border (akin to malpractice insurance). Police officers with no complains or law suit pay outs have low rates & cheap insurance, and those that have many complaints and law suits against them face astronomical insurance rates and get weeded out financially by insurance companies if police forces & police unions aren't willing or able to do it themselves....

I'm not saying it's THE answer, but it might be a part of the answer.

In the wake of the unfortunate passing of George Floyd, protests have started around the country demanding justice for Mr. Floyd, and accusing police officers like myself of being “racists” and “murderers” and “racist murderers.”

Now look, I’m not saying there are no racists wearing the blue. And there have certainly been instances in the past where officers crossed a line and, as a result, people got hurt or died. But you have to understand these are only a tiny fraction of the thousands of police officers working in the world today. The rest of us are good, tolerant men and women whose only crime is loving our communities and using any means necessary to defend the racists by violently breaking up the demonstrations that arise after they murder someone.

Personally I can say with total certainty that, no matter your skin colour, orientation or background, I enjoy pepper spraying all people equally. Especially when they are not moving back as quickly as I demand or if they say something about how they are only demonstrating because my colleague murdered their friend. Let me tell you; black, white or purple, everyone hates being pepper sprayed.

It’s like if you worked in an office. There may be some people in the office who said or did things you didn’t agree with. And you would not be responsible for their actions. However if they were accused of doing something wrong you would of course immediately side with them against everyone and claim that the accusations are false, even if a video showed them doing that exact thing. That’s what work buddies do!

And just because some police officers made the mistake of murdering someone in public rather than in custody where there are no video cameras around, that doesn’t give protestors the right to loot and destroy buildings. And it certainly doesn’t give them the right to peacefully march when me and my friends got all decked out in our best riot gear and came looking to fight. We spent so long psyching ourselves up! Fortunately it turns out you can just start hitting people and claim they started it.

So next time you want to paint with a broad brush just remember that not all cops are monsters. Some of us simply protect monsters because it’s easier than trying to create change from within. And because they’re the best hitter on the police softball team, and we really want to win the league this year!

I agree. I've advocated, as a condition of licensure to be a police officer, every cop must carry $1 million in liability insurance. Insurance companies don't have a political reputation to protect, and don't care what the papers say. They'll look at the odds, and pay up.

And then they'll raise the cop's premiums. Three or four incidents of excessive force or violation of rights, and Officer Friendly's premiums are higher than his after-tax income. Sayonara, Officer Friendly!

OHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! The ambulance chaser wants cops to be INSURED!

I do recall a news report from a few years back detailing THE SHARP RISE in the number of "MALPRACTICE" suits leveled

at doctors in United States!

THERE WAS NO CORRESPONDING INCREASE in convictions - merely a notable uptick in "settlements"!

Meaning that BORE LAWYERS WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO were taking on sketchy cases and harassing doctors

and their insurance companies until the cost of arguing through the courts got so costly that the ambulance chasers

got paid a TOKEN SUM TO GET LOST!

In related news - has anybody here read the John Grisham book called "The Rooster Bar"?

It is a truly wonderful indictment of not just the legal system but of the ENTIRE College and University SCAM

that civil service union HOGS are running on our kids - with the shameless assistance of LIE-berals WHO NEED

those HOG VOTES!!
