I will be the first one to admit that the human population is very large relative to the Earth's ability to sustain life, and the problem will only get worse since sex is so much more fun than dying.
That being said, I would not dismiss this particular article too quickly, because for the last few years we have seen government funded projects digging up and re-constituting the virus that caused the Spanish Flu (misnamed, as the flu actually first appeared on US Military bases), and pointedly altering it to get past any inherited defenses we survivors of the last outbreak might have. Meanwhile, the use of such a depopulation tool is being prepped by a campaign of news stories promising us that the next great flu outbreak is going to come from "No ****, this is really where it came from, Honest!" Pigs. Or was that birds. Maybe Fish. Meanwhile, the much feared Ebola, which has not been seen for quite a while, luckily only broke out in very remote locales in Africa from which carriers of the virus were unlikely to get out, thereby containing the infection. Together with the fact that no natural source for the virus was ever found, and no vector identified between the various infection sites, there is a real possibility that it too is an artificially created depopulation tool.

I've also thought about the various flu bugs being somehow nurtured in secret laboratories by some insidious organization. Others have suggested that HIV was a CIA sponsored man-made plague that was intentionally introduced. Now on this thread, SARS has been mentioned as well as Polio.

My mind will not let me imagine the sort of people who would work at developing strains of virus that would kill people to reduce the population. Obviously, the person or people developing these diseases would want to preserve their own families, so the purpose of the new diseases is to kill other people, and their children. Isn't this straight out of a science horror show?

If diseases were effective population control, and lack of disease was the culrpit causing over population, then Africa's population would be dwindling while ours rose.

This is not the case.

In fact, disease creates MORE breeding, while the absence of disease seems to curb our need to churn out babies ad nauseum. Industrialization, health care, and education are THE most effective population control tools (I put forth Canada's current birth rates as proof).

So the article makes little sense.

I know what you mean. There have been many plots in books and movies where some fiendishly clever disease would spare those of us who were intelligent, handsome, beautiful, athletic, and so on, and killing all others. The problem is always that some didn't fit the pre-ordained mold. The Stephen Hawkings of the world would likely not be spared. Einstein was not one of the beautiful people either. If science invents a disease that kills off excess people, I rather hope it first kills the inventors.
