Hello,

could someone please pass on there Canadian knowledge , and tell me if Yellowknife or Fort McMurray is the best place to view the Northern Lights . Also would anyone know of good tour guides / operators that are available in these areas on a daily basis , as we only have two nights to spend. We will be visiting Canada for the first time this September. Thankyou .

Kind regards, Lance.

For $100, up north.
There should be lots of clips on the web. When I was there you might get 7 day a month where it was worth stopping to look at. If there aren't ant far north sky cams somebody should put some in, well worth the trouble to see the full extent from being inside the circle. I saw it that way as being there was what I was being paid to do. You can see your shadow in the moon light.

There is no guaranteed best place, it's a crapshoot like bill said. You're more likely to see a good auroral display in some places than others, but much depends on the level of solar activity. Farther north will give you better odds, so Yellowknife is likely to be better than Fort McMurray, but if you have only two days you may see nothing no matter where you go,it doesn't happen every night. The aurora depend on the sun injecting charged particles into the upper atmosphere, and a recent solar flare or mass ejection event can produce spectacular displays if they hit the earth, but most of them don't. And that's a good thing. The most spectacular auroral display I've ever seen happened in Minot, North Dakota when I was 10 years old, way south of where you're going. Ya takes yer chances...
