Newly relaxed private liquor store hours are good news for those who roll out of bed at 7 a.m. needing a drink

There's great and totally civilized news this morning for those whose daily COVID-19 routine consists of walking to a local government liquor store at noon and then standing in a long line of fellow citizens looking for a way to cope.

The British Columbia government has announced it's allowing privately-run liquor stores to open as early at 7 a.m., with closing times set for 11 p.m. The move is designed to both ease congestion at government liquor stores, as well as to provide a more convenient shopping time for senior citizens who are justifiably famous for getting up at 5:15 a.m. while millennials, Gen-Zers, and still-slacking Gen Xers lie in bed sawing logs.

The relaxation of hours also applies to licensed retail stores, rural government-agency outlets, wine stores, and craft liquor manufacturers with onsite sales. Delivery services are also permitted to purchase liquor for customers during the changed hours, which will remain in place until at least mid-July.

So if the first thing you think when you roll out of bed in the morning is "I really need a drink", you've now got the kind of options that shoppers in the rest of the world take for granted.

See you in the Legacy lineup tomorrow at 6:59 a.m. And please, stay away from the Galiano because quite frankly six Yellow Birds before noon is the only way some of us are coping these days.
