B.C. Liberals, including several dozen from Kamloops, are in Penticton this weekend for the biannual party convention. Veteran MLA and former finance minister Colin Hansen said Friday it’s time for the party to consider a name change. He did not suggest a new label, but said it needs to reflect the coalition of those who vote Liberal and Conservative federally.
Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger, one of the most veteran members of the legislature, said the debate is an old one. The Liberal party under then-leader Gordon Wilson became the home of choice when Social Credit collapsed.
“We went through that debate thoroughly in caucus and cabinet 10 years ago,” Krueger said.
But he agreed the time may be right for another consideration.
“I haven’t felt an urgency (to change the name) but I know other people think it’s a good idea.”
Hoberly Hove, the party’s president in Kamloops-South Thompson, said he’s comfortable with the Liberal moniker but not stuck on it.
“I always thought it’s Social Credit with a name I like better.”
