BC Liberal's Consider name Change
By Cam Fortems
Daily News Staff Reporter

B.C. Liberals, including several dozen from Kamloops, are in Penticton this weekend for the biannual party convention. Veteran MLA and former finance minister Colin Hansen said Friday it’s time for the party to consider a name change. He did not suggest a new label, but said it needs to reflect the coalition of those who vote Liberal and Conservative federally.
Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger, one of the most veteran members of the legislature, said the debate is an old one. The Liberal party under then-leader Gordon Wilson became the home of choice when Social Credit collapsed.
“We went through that debate thoroughly in caucus and cabinet 10 years ago,” Krueger said.
But he agreed the time may be right for another consideration.
“I haven’t felt an urgency (to change the name) but I know other people think it’s a good idea.”
Hoberly Hove, the party’s president in Kamloops-South Thompson, said he’s comfortable with the Liberal moniker but not stuck on it.
“I always thought it’s Social Credit with a name I like better.”

Man, the BC Liberal party must be in a very worried state indeed.

For the life of me, I fail to see how changing the party's name will in anyway help the falling fortunes of the BC Libs - the old rose by any other name saying - comes to mind, though in this case rose should be replaced with thorn. Are they stupid enough to think that under a different name, voters will come flocking back? Oh wait, this is a political party, of course they are stupid enough to believe that. Good luck on the new name - it won't make a whit of difference to me or thousands of other voters in the province.

Maybe they just want to change the name so thay can claim the liberals didn't lose power in BC.

I don't think it will matter what they do, they can call themselves the 'everyday people's party' if they want but it won't change the result that is coming in the fall. I would imagine form the mood of the people in this province the upcoming election is going to make the fall of the federal Libs look a big win. Our economy is stale and dying, our housing market is less than sluggish. There are no jobs out there unless your ready to work night-shift at Timmy's for $9/hr. Campbell and his pals shredded the Charter with all the govt union contracts. The writing is on the wall and they know it. I imagine they will try to carry enough seats in strong Liberal ridings to maintain party status but from what I hear they are making plans to be a very small opposition party. The name change is really directed at the election after this one in an effort to take advantage of the short memories of the electorate if the next govt screws up.
