With all the hugs, tears and cheers — not to mention the dude-plomacy — at Wednesday’s Three Amigos conference, you wouldn’t have expected a moment of unguarded, unvarnished truth. And I wouldn’t have expected it from U.S. President Barack Obama, who essentially told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to start investing in defence. In discussing the NATO alliance, Obama said “We need more Canada.” How many of us, in the defence community, have been telling the prime minister the same thing now for eight months — or, for that matter, had been telling Stephen Harper, Paul Martin and Jean Chretien before the same thing him?
The fact is that Canada hasn’t met its commitmentto use a penurious two per cent of its GDP for defence spending — ironically — since Pierre Trudeau reached that lofty peak in the 1970s, amidst a background of rusty ships and faltering aircraft.
