I wouldn't be too proud about your downloads this month Frubsen. Although you have every legal right to do so, it's that kind of consistent download activity from users that has caused ISP's to go for the bitcap in the first place.

Maybe abitbent, but I honestly don't know how much bandwidth I use... However, this coming billing period, I will definately look into a temporary software solution to meter how much I use and how often. I'm big into downloading svcds of the latest movies. That's about it on large downloads.

I rarely use filesharing apps. Here's a great example of how the cap works and how filesharing disrupts it.

Example: You have a self-cleaning oven, and as you all know, ovens use a lot of electricity. For 4 hours every now and then you leave your over on selfclean mode and it automatically shuts off. But if you leave the timer on for the whole night, you're going to be looking at a large electricity bill.. It's a constant use of electricity which they WILL charge you for.

Now, filesharing programs, gnucleus for example, do the same thing.. There are constant bandwidth uses by these programs as millions can be querying your machine at any given time. Upload and Download. If you leave the programs on all the time, you're going to have a large bandwidth usage for the whole month. As typically, your file sharing app can use 15-40 (yes, 40) kbytes per second. Do the math, and you'll see how this compares to a self-clean oven :)

I pay for unlimited internet, I will use it to its full extent. They can't just put a cap on because I am getting what I'm paying for. $44.95 is already way too much for a 1.5mb down and 192kbps up from rogers. It's really pathetic what they're doing.

If you are behind a router, software apps will only limit the traffic coming from your PC.

Depending on the router you have, you could enable QOS/Packet filtering and have it block certain types of protocols which are known to consume large amounts of bandwidth etc.

The Linksys WRT54G-RG seems to offer QOS options how do I use them?... if I flash it with DD-WRT whould I lose the Voice-Optimized for Fido Uno Servicesettings???
