Without submitting my resume to become the resident word nerd, it is absolutely critical that if "atheists" are to remove themselves from the belief / non-belief paradox that the word "atheism" get less air play.

The very nature of the word defeats itself, buy it's root in "theism".

Let's think of a new and better word then, I'm game. I'm sure there are people on this thread, who
are deeper thinkers than I, so I will leave it to them.

As I wrote, how about "Humanism"?

The Humanist community defines it as a non-spiritual philosophy of compassion and ethical behaviour, based in compassion and reason.

It's a bit of a paraphrase, but that's fairly accurate.

Both atheism and humanism have too much baggage. You need a fresh start. I shall work on it. God willing, I'll have you a tag!

I'm wondering if this is going to get around to how many angels can dance on the tip of a pin, or better yet, if a tree falls in the forest, and there is no one around to hear it, is there any sound. What ever a persons beliefs, they are their own, and should be respected. I believe in God, but not in organised religion, or in the way it perceives God. I like the way one religious person put it to me:- you believe in God, and you do unto others as you want them to treat you, that makes you a christian. Impressed the hell out of me, but still don't feel christian, and wonder why people think it is so important to put someone in a category. If the subject never comes up, everyone gets along fine and assumes the other is just like them. We really can be a boring lot, if we don't try to dig too deep. That didn't solve anything, but it did give my opinion.

Able: a person's beliefs are their own business and only their business: nobody has the right to criticize another's beliefs.

Until, that is, they put them out into the public as statements of truth about the world and how it works.

Do unto others as you want them to treat you? You actually think "god" came up with that? You actually think that has anything to do with spirituality?

It is elementary ethics. Stuff we learned before we left the savannah.

What does this have to do with that metaphor of precision being used to measure an absurdity: the angels/pin thing?

Pangloss.
