Home Secretary Suella Braverman says that "these are the days that we dread" after the deaths of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel from France to England.

A major search and rescue operation involving helicopters and the RNLI was launched at 3.05am on Wednesday after authorities were alerted to a small boat in distress in the Channel.

The search is ongoing, with 43 people rescued alive - some from the water, others from the vessel involved.

A fisherman whose crew saved 31 people stranded in the English Channel said he was woken in the early hours of the morning when migrants surrounded his boat - the Arcturus - "screaming for help".

The Americans have to deal with migrants from Mexico. The British have to deal with migrants from France - from one rich country to another.

Maybe they’re trying to escape the European Union, and they’ve heard rumours about Brexit?

I've often wondered that myself.

Why are there huge refugee camps on the north coast of France - like Sangatte - where the refugees gather to come to Britain?

Why do the poor huddled masses prefer to live in Britain than France, even risking their lives to get from the latter to the former?

They don't want to live in France. They want to live in Britain. Why?

Your point may be in jest, but it does seem they would rather live in Britain than in the EU. Hundreds of them cross from France to Britain everyday in dinghies. It seems Britain is the Promised Land, not France or the EU.

24 hours ago these people were being fished out of the Channel from France by the Royal Navy and RNLI. Some of them died. Why didn't they stay in France?

Could it be that they know they'd have a much better quality of life in Britain?

So that then makes the question - why leave France to go to the UK, since it's "one rich country to another"?

Two reasons, I think. Most everyone in the world understands that speaking English will lead to a better standard of living. The other one is that Britain has a better welfare system than France. (see item 1)
