RCMP have arrested an 18-year-old man, and a dog rescue group is in the process of retrieving a small German Shepard puppy that was thrown through the air on to a concrete road in a northern Manitoba community recently.
The incident was caught on video and posted to social media by the alleged offenders before being taken down. A Facebook user, however, recorded the original video and kept it online to expose the alleged abusers.
RCMP were made aware of the video, which was shot in Easterville, in which the puppy is seen thrown high into the air to land on concrete. A man is heard to say “the dog killer” before laughing and throwing the dog, who is heard in the background crying and whimpering as the man walks away.
RCMP arrested the 18-year-old Wednesday morning. He has not been charged, but remains in custody.
The Easterville Rescue Network posted on its Facebook page the dog had been rescued and was eating and drinking.
A small German Shepard puppy has been sent to Winnipeg for treatment of serious injuries after a video surfaced of the dog being thrown on to a concrete road in a northern Manitoba community recently.
The incident was caught on video and posted to social media by the alleged offenders before being taken down. A Facebook user, however, recorded the original video and kept it online to expose the alleged abusers.
RCMP said an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case.
Mounties were made aware of the video, which was shot in Easterville, in which the puppy is seen thrown high into the air and lands on concrete. A man is heard to say “the dog killer” before laughing and throwing the dog, who is heard in the background crying and whimpering as the man walks away.
The Easterville Rescue Network posted on its Facebook page the dog had been rescued and was eating and drinking. The dog, which they have named Asha, was to be handed over to the Manitoba Underdog Rescue for further care and would arrive in Winnipeg early Thursday morning, MUR’s foster coordinator Desiree Klippenstein said.
Klippenstein said Asha will be re-evaluated by vets in Winnipeg and a foster home has been lined up for her.
“She can’t weight-bear at all on her left side. They tried to get her moving a little bit, but she is yelping in pain,” Klippenstein said.
RCMP arrested an 18-year-old man on Wednesday morning. He has not been charged, but remains in custody.
Kyle Jahns, spokesman for the Winnipeg Humane Society, said Manitoba has some of the strongest laws against animal cruelty. He called the video “horrific.”
“You never want to see any animal treated way,” he said. “And to see it being shared online like it was is very disturbing to see.”
Klippenstein said punishment on animal cruelty cases should be in line with offences committed on humans.
“They say a lot of the time when people do things to animals it’s like they’re laughing that they could do quote-unquote more serious crimes, so I think the repercussions should be the same,” she said.
Jahns said the video underscores the need for more education.
“It’s important to teach people from a young age that animals have feelings, they feel pain, and they’re very much a part of this community as we are,” he said.
Klippenstein said Asha’s vet bills are likely to be quite high and said MUR would be appreciative of donations to help pay them down. Information on how to donate is available online at manitobaunderdogs.org/donate.

The German Shepherd puppy thrown in the air on to a road in a northern Manitoba community in a disturbing video seen online this week was able to stand Thursday and veterinarians are hopeful she has suffered little or no spinal damage.
The Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, who retrieved the puppy from Easterville late Wednesday night and brought her back to Winnipeg, said in an email update that Asha surprised her care-givers when she stood up Thursday morning.
“When our volunteers picked her up from the RCMP, we were immediately hopeful that her spine wasn’t damaged. Even though her back legs weren’t moving, she could wiggle her tail,” MUR’s Lindsay Gillanders said in an email. “She decided to surprise and delight us all by standing, which means that the damage to her spine is probably minimal. We do suspect that she has a pelvic fracture, and she isn’t putting weight on her front right paw.”
Asha was slated to be X-rayed at 11 a.m.
The German Shepherd puppy seen thrown in the air in a northern Manitoba community in a disturbing video appears to have suffered no fractures, a dog rescue organization said Thursday.
The Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, who retrieved the puppy from Easterville late Wednesday night and brought her back to Winnipeg, said in an email update Asha surprised her caregivers by standing up Thursday morning. She was X-rayed and later Thursday, MUR said an examination at Dakota Veterinary Hospital turned up no fractures.
“She can walk however she’s in a lot of pain and prefers to lie down,” MUR’s Lindsay Gillanders said in an email. “Her front right leg and left hind leg are bothering her the most. It is suspected that this is from soft tissue damage and bruising from the over-extension of her body when she was thrown, and the impact when she hit the ground.”
RCMP announced an arrest on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, they announced Jesse Young, 18, of Easterville had been charged with causing unnecessary pain and injury to a dog, as well as a breach of undertaking.
Young remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in a courtroom in The Pas on Tuesday.
Gillanders said there’s already been plenty of interest from people trying to adopt Asha.
Those wanting to adopt a dog that has experienced trauma, however, need to be aware of what they’re getting into and have to be sure they can take on the responsibilities, the Winnipeg Human Society’s Val Poulton said.
“We would be looking for somebody who can provide for both the physical and emotional needs for the particular dog,” Poulton, the WHS’ behaviour and intake manager, said. “The physical is pretty straightforward ... When it comes to the mental state, however, they can be quite different. Some dogs really recover quite readily from trauma and some do not. So each case needs to be looked at individually.”
How Asha may recover mentally, Poulton said, could depend on what her experiences with people have been thus far. As a young dog, however, Poulton said Asha may not have developed those negative associations yet.
“If they’ve had positive experiences and is stable emotionally, then one would expect that the dog would recover pretty well,” she said. “If the dog has not had positive experiences with people then it would be definitely more difficult. A puppy is kind of a clean slate generally ... and puppies can be pretty resilient.”

Gillanders said MUR’s funds for vet bills were already being drained by sick dogs they cared for in the spring and Asha’s bills are likely to further tax that budget. Donations can be made at manitobaunderdogs.org/donate.

Now recovering happily, Asha is getting a second chance at being a puppy.
The German Shepherd was injured when she was thrown up in the air for a hard landing on pavement in northern Manitoba last month, as shown in a disturbing Facebook video.
She is now in the care of a foster family by way of Manitoba Underdogs Rescue and is healing.
Asha "saw her vet Dr. Gould at Dakota Veterinary Hospital on Saturday, and is improving!" said MUR's Lindsay Gillanders in an email. "Her front right leg is doing much better. She's still in a lot of pain in her left hind leg, but it seems to be lessening. She is much less hesitant to walk now and is even trying to play with the dogs and cats in her foster home!"
They'd been worried she had suffered spinal damage after the incident; she could walk but was in significant pain and preferred to lie down.
On July 28, RCMP announced Jesse Young, 18, of Easterville had been charged with causing unnecessary pain and injury to a dog, as well as a breach of undertaking. He’s been remanded in custody to Aug. 8 for his alleged involvement.
Gillanders said there's already been plenty of interest from people trying to adopt Asha.
Those wanting to adopt a dog that has experienced trauma, however, need to be aware of what they're getting into and have to be sure they can take on the responsibilities, the Winnipeg Human Society's Val Poulton previously told the Sun.
But the pup had a delightful long weekend spent by the pool with plenty of new toys, as shown in photos released by the rescue Tuesday.
