I've eaten bear a couple of times ... once just fried over a campfire (I was pissed at the guys for leaving their garbage out and having to shoot the bear so I cooked it for dinner for them) and once smoked like ham. The smoked bear was quite good. Unfortunately a skinned bear looks almost identical to a man ... creepy.

Yup the Alberta advantage...Employers have the right to pound the living hell out of their employees.

It's time to shut down these big packers anyway. Maybe this will help on the way to that.

Doubtful. The real story is a little different from the union version. As usual.

There was a show on CBC...The Fifth Estate, I think...about the packing plants in Alberta. Truely horrid working conditions that cause everything from repetitive stress injuries to lost digits. They employ mostly immigrant workers who don't know their rights and are afraid to go to the authorities. To make it even worse, those workers face daily discrimination from the rednecks in the town.

Maybe we should run Tyson out for their criminal activities and give the packing plant to the employees?

Unless you have been to Brooks in the last few years (and I have, at least once or twice a month), you have no idea how that town operates or what you are talking about. The so-called "rednecks" you talk about are the least of the worries there. Any show on CBC will take the absolute worst of anything in Alberta and totally ignore the positives. Are the conditions great? No, and need to be improved. But no one is forcing anyone to go to Brooks and work there. People go there for the jobs, nobody forces them to go there. The transCanada runs right by Brooks, there is bus service, and Medicine Hat is only an hour away, Calgary a couple of hours away. Nobody is a prisoner in Brooks, except the criminals, and they don't work at Lakeside.

I have a friend who farms in Brooks and I can tell you that the teen suicide rate there is through the roof 8O Something is definatly wrong with that place

Of that there is no doubt. :wink: I am not defending Brooks, I actually do not like the place at all. But the Lakeside issue is not as is continually portrayed.

The trouble with Brooks is that is went from a basic small rural town with long term families, etc. to a town that literally overnight had people from the maritimes and the Sudanese becoming part of the population. As with any small town, this created frictions between the locals and the two new groups, and it has taken a while to grow into itself. Over the last eight years, the look of Brooks has changed incredibley, some to the negative, some to the positive. Basically, though, there were too many changes too fast. Any community would have problems with the kind of massive changes that occured in Brooks. And the BSE crisis has not helped at all for the last two plus years. When you put the cowboys, the oilpatch guys, the maritimers, and the Sudanese all together all of a sudden, and throw in the BSE, Brooks has a lot of issues.

I used to live in High River(home to one of the biggest meat packing plants in Alberta) and Calgary and my kids live in Calgary, I consider myself part Albertan.
I have nothing but respect for Albertan's, their hospitality, traditions, down to earth common sense and can-do spirit. They have even when oil prices are low the lowest unemployment rate, lowest taxes,highest educated and highest standard of living in the country.
Despite what liberal politicians tell you they have the best health care system in the country.
Calgary is one of the cleanest, safest large cities with the highest rate of volunteerism in the country.
The fact that so many Canadians want to move to Alberta is no accident, it's hard to argue with success.
Alberta is also the most generous, it contributes almost 10 billion $ a year in federal tranfer payments far higher per capita than any other province. This is more than the total royalties it recieves from oil & natural gas.
Canada needs Alberta far more than Alberta needs Canada...a lot of Canadians should think about that for a minute cause a lot of Albertans are getting sick and tired of the treatment they get from eastern Canada and what goes on there.

I didn't mind living in Alberta for all those years, yes most people there are kind and giving, there are a few tools there, but you can find them anywhere.

The healthcare was Ok I guess, the clinics never seem to have had any significant waits, but what I didn't like was that unlike anywhere else (and by saying that I'm comparing Nunavut,NWT,BC,Nova Scotia, and Pei) is that you actually had to pay for health care. Going in to have a child for example can get you dinged for around $600, and there were monthly or bi monthly fees to deal with to... :lol: can't quite remember it's been a couple years.

Either way I never really had to pay for health care on top of what my taxes contribute until I lived in Alberta. I remember being a little suprised at the time, it's great if you can afford it but there are many that can't, and if they have to go, they'll be dogged with bills for months or years, depending on your income.
