for those who can handle a little different football to the world cup ...

a highlight was the battle between traditional rivals Melbourne (est 1858) and Collingwood (est 1892) football clubs, which drew a crowd of 78,773 spectators.

enjoy!

West Coast (Perth) still top the table, having lost only the one game, to their local rivals from Fremantle.

Re: RE: AFL 2006 - world's best footy - video highlights

English Guy said:
Aussie No Rules "football"

Give me a break Sheila!

let me assure you, there are rules.
and pretty strict ones actually
it just takes a little while to understand, because they are very different to other forms of football ....

sure, unlike soccer you can use your hands, but there is 100 times more kicking involved than rugby or football.

In fact, there are more types of kicking skills than any other form of football:

* Drop Punt
* Grubber / Soccer
* Banana
* Checkside
* Torpedo / Spiral / Punt
* Drop Kick
* Scissor Kick
* Bomb
* Stab Pass

You have to be good at passing the ball to other players around the field. Not easy with an oval shaped ball.
The best players can do many of these complex kicks using either foot !
Not only that, but you can actually be tackled or hit as you kick it !
Very hard, believe me.
Just ask this guy.

Most of the kicks go into the air, so you have to jump in a contest to catch the ball. And there are just as many types of catches.

And it is one of the only football games in the world where the main aim is to kick a goal you can only achieve the highest points with your feet .... in rugby you score tries, in football you score touchdowns, in Irish football you can use your fist, in soccer you can head a goal, but in Aussie Rules, the primary object is to kick it through the big posts !

do you have a problem English Guy ?
have you actually seen or played the game ?
you sound like you're just going by some sort of reputation.

Some photos from AFL round 5

Meanwhile some exciting times for the local Ontario league's 18th season. A dogged Mississauga outfit have shot to the top of the Ontario Australian Football League ladder over Toronto Downtown with a big win over the Eagles to charge toward the finals series .... And this weekend Burnaby, Vancouver and Calgary prepare to clash with some of the best sides in the USA for the 5 year old British Columbia Australian Football Association's Westcoast Challenge in to be played out in Vancouver.

If you've never kicked an Aussie rules footy before, then I definately recommend giving it a go. It takes plenty of skill, courage and fitness, but unlike rugby or football, it as safe to play as soccer or basketball and accomodates players of all shapes and sizes.
There are now amateur teams within reach of every part of our great nation (except for Quebec but stay tuned on that one ... if you know anyone in Montreal that is interested, let me know).

Meanwhile in the young OAFL, where the crowds around the big ground, extremely modest by AFL standards have witnessed one of the most exciting and even seasons ever, Etobicoke have taken the top of the ladder on percentage from in-form Mississauga with a stunning win over favourites Toronto Downtown.

1. West Coast Eagles
2. Adelaide
3. Fremantle
4. Sydney Swans
5. Collingwood
6. St Kilda
7. Melbourne
8. Western Bulldogs

Two from Perth, one each from Adelaide and Sydney in the top 4 teams.
