"CFB Trenton bars media from base - 'U.S.-style tactics' condemned"

OTTAWA - The Conservative government is refusing to allow media to cover tonight's return of four Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan, a surprise decision that has critics accusing Prime Minister Stephen Harper of adopting American-style tactics to limit public exposure to Canada's casualties.

From the start of the Afghan mission four years ago, media have been permitted to cover the solemn ceremony that surrounds the unloading of the caskets of soldiers killed overseas.

But tonight, reporters and television crews attempting to cover the return of the bodies of the soldiers killed by a roadside bomb north of Kandahar on Saturday will find themselves barred from the base on orders of Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor.

To my thinking, this dishonour soldiers. There is not doubt that the reason given is just a dodge, and that PM Harper wants to limit the negative exposure to the war in Afghanistan.

This is a departure from Canadian traditions, and is seen by aware people as a cozying up to the USA's Bush 'fascio-religious' ways.

Canadians do not need protection from negative images, what we need is the truth and the full story so we can openly and objectively DECIDE IF WE SUPPORT THIS WAR OR NOT.

The thing is, Harper knows that the direction of this war will not be compatible with Canadian morality, and so we are seeing the tactic of media manipulation of the facts. Harper knows people will just let the negative aspects of Canada's genocide in Afghanistan, or whatever it really IS that we are doing there, to slip from their minds.

AS OF TODAY:
We no longer have a full and open assessment of the facts on Canada's role in the Afghan war. Therefore, we can no longer support it, since it may be something we would not condone, we just do not know. Canadians are not as gullable and easily swayed as Americans are when it comes to war.

RE: Afghan War:Now MEDIA is barred from fallen soldiers arri

Harper just wants to minimize any and all bad news that might stick to him. Those are OUR soldiers that are falling. To insulate ourselves from the consequences of our decisions is deliberate ignorance. To accept control of the media on this issue dishonours us all.
