A new element was supposedly created for one millisecond. The new element, as yet unnamed, is atomic number 118, making it an inert gas.

WASHINGTON - Revisiting one of physics' most embarrassing cases of scientific misconduct, researchers from Russia and the United States announced Monday that they have created a new super-heavy element, atomic number 118.
Scientists said they smashed together calcium with the manmade element californium to make an atom with 118 protons in its nucleus. The new element lasted for just one millisecond, but it was the heaviest element ever made and the first manmade inert gas

Neat. I'm sure we'll make even more new elements as time goes by. Just gotta have the right elements and the right energy and the right technique.

What will really, really impress me, is if, in the distant future, we create some sort of an object out of "atoms" made out of tau leptons or muons. Bonus points would be awarded if they do it in an appropriate environment that will keep the particles stable.

If its an inert gas they may be able to stretch its half-life a little by giving it a seat in Parliament.
