On the eve of Canada Day this year, before a justice of the peace, Jason Tree and David Connors are to wed, before their friends and co-workers in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, garbed in their crimson uniforms. However, it's more than likely that The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member for Calgary Southwest and the Prime Minister of Canada, is going to be one very grumpy from-afar on-looker, as the first time two males in the Mounties are to wed in the history of Canada.

The marriage would mark, more-or-less, the third anniversary of same-sex marriage in Canada; it was around three years ago that the Supreme Court of the Province of Ontario ruled that it was improper, and in contravention of the constitution, to deny same-sex couples the right to be married. The various other Provinces of Canada followed, until the Parliament Assembled of Canada passed the Civil Marriage Act, granting same-sex couples the right to marry from one end of the country to the other.

This busts some stereotypes [...] We talk about the Mounties getting their man, but I don't think a lot of people thought about getting their man this way.
Mr. Harper likely knows that the same-sex marriage issue is one on which he isn't going to win any points — and that could explain why he has been so quiet on the issue. After a quiet announcement that a free vote would take place after the Summer recess, Mr. Harper has ordered the Conservative Party of Canada to refuse comment in relation to same-sex marriage. It would be reasonable to assume that Mr. Harper is hoping that his free vote is defeated¹, so that the issue can be put to rest at last, and he can move on with his priorities.

RE: A Grand Ol' Mounties

Personally I think it's cool that such a thing can finally happen, publically and proudly- maybe one day MPs will even be able to elaborate beyond "no comment" but beyond that, it is a good indicator of our social progress. Let's hope you are right about Harper wanting the vote to fall on the "nay" side- if he's smart that's the intent, cos that's what should happen in the minds of many....
I still can't get past his previous affiliations and their beliefs tho- I think a LOT of his personal friends/base will give him crap about it, and he would be put in the uncomfortable position of explaining to the zealous "base" why the "fight" is so wrongheaded and pointless....

I don't know, I really can't buy that Harper is "planning" on the vote to fail, and that he only opened the idea to fulfill a campaign "promise"- I thought the way it was broached during the campaign it was more like a "okay I admit I'm still gonna go that route" after the tight-lipped-ness up to that point...

Anyways, a happy event that should make us all proud (the wedding, not the politics surrounding it) :D
