Let's just agree Canada exists as a political structure, there is no issue if Canada exists or not caracal, 6 billion people, give or take a few, acknowledge it's existance. Stop hijacking my thread, I would sincerely like to hear opinions.

i am helping you along the path to discovery ITN.

"The majority consists of fools, utter fools. Beware of the majority.
If so many people are following, that is enough a proof
that something is wrong.
Truth happens to individuals, not to crowds. "

Start another thread then and lead the way, I seriously want to hear opinions, no disrespect to you.

"Life is to be lived!"
indeed!

"found a very real place to dwell...
CANADA.. IMHO the greatest geographical and political place on the planet we call Earth!"
and i didn't find, but always was a part of Earth. I dismissed the superficial when i was very young.

So to ITN, to go back to the original question:
Canada, like all nations, provinces, territories, etc, are merely geographical markers to make navigation easier.

Being Canadian... now that is the question. Do any of us really know what it is to be Canadian, to feel Canadian, to think and act Canadian. The leaders of our Government do not know the answer to this question, so how is the average Joe to know. Too often I find our country sitting in the shadows, our MP's and leaders caught up in their own self importance, trying to make their mark in Canadian history, reluctant to see beyond their own backyard. I see jobs moving to countries that can produce goods cheaper, but why cheaper?? so that Canadians, (who bitch and complain about poor rates of return on their investments but also are quite happy to point out that there are fewer jobs to go around), can increase the return on their investments, it is a vicious cylce. More return on investment means fewer Canadian jobs, means more disatisfaction, unemployment, more depression. I tired of unions & strikes, the "we are owed something" ..."it is our right" attitude ... right to what, job security, pay equity, I wish, there is no such thing. Do I sound bitter, yes to a certain degree...

But I also see a county with great beauty and diversity, the mountains, the prairies, the ocean coasts, tundra and land of the mid-nite sun, our cities and villages. Our heritage that is grounded in England and France.

Resources that are the envy of other countries. A country that welcomes different cultures, (although I do not believe that are as tolerant as we would like others to think we are) But you gotta give us marks for trying.

I do not think I have answered your question "ITN" i.e. what is is to be Canadian. The question is to complex and to simple at the same time...... as is the answer.

We are, what we are, no more and no less.

araho, a beautiful and compelling first post. First and foremost, welcome to Canadian Content. If you ever require assistance, feel free to message me, or perhaps more appropriately, one of our dedicated Administrators or Moderators.

To address your points, I think you are being a bit hard on Canada, or the people thereof, at the very least; yes, perhaps we are in a period where we are unsure of precisely what makes people Canadian. However, that does not change the fact that for the most part, despite cultures that may seem opposite one another within one nation's framework, we do tend to work toward common objectives on the world stage.

Thank you for the welcome. I do not want to appear to be too hard on Canada, it has been my home & native land for close to 50 years (God am I that old - I still feel 20). It has provided me with a good education, freedom to follow my goals, health care, in a relatively safe environment, it allows me to discuss openly my views on our government, education and health system, world politics etc. It has also provide my children with the same and hopefully their children.

I believe that to be Canadian is the same as being American or English or French... we all want the same things, world peace, a place where we are safe and where we can bring our children up safely, a feeling of ownership, pride and belonging.

I am proud of Canada's role in providing peace keeping missions in countries that are not as fortunate as ours. I can only pray that perhaps one day there will be no need for these missions. Until then I salute our troops and the government officials who continue to pursue this goal.
