8 August 2023. From time crystals to wormholes: When is a quantum simulation real?
Physicists are using quantum computers to conjure various exotic phenomena and are claiming
that their creations are truly real. The work is forcing us to ask challenging questions about
the nature of quantum reality
/By Philip Ball/
----
WHEN scientists reported they had created a space-time wormhole in November last year,
the world’s media were all over the story, even though they struggled to make sense of it.

As far as many observers could see, physicist Maria Spiropulu at the California Institute
of Technology and her colleagues had in fact merely used a quantum computer
to simulate a wormhole. Good luck flying a spaceship through that.
What confused matters was that the team insisted the work amounted
to more than just a simulation. The quantum computation,
the researchers said, was fully equivalent to the creation of a wormhole.
If you find that hard to swallow, you aren’t alone. Ask other physicists about
Spiropulu’s claims and you tend to get a lot of long pauses, chin-stroking
and disagreement. It seems there is genuine confusion about if and
when a quantum computation can create real entities or just simulate them.

AUGUST 10, 2023. Calculations predict surprising quark diffusion in hot nuclear matter
/by Karen McNulty Walsh, Brookhaven National Laboratory/
----
Scientists can use powerful colliders to smash atomic nuclei together to create
a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). This "soup" of quarks and gluons,
some of the fundamental building blocks of matter, filled the early universe.
-----
---------
What are protons made of?
Proton consists of quarks (up, down, charm, strange, top, bottom + gluon +
+ antiquarks + tetraquark + pentaquark + leptoquark (?) + . . .
This "soup" of quarks and gluons is inedible.

"The thing with a simulation is that it is per definition a model. A model of reality.
Just as a drawing of your house is not a real house but a model of your house.

A wormhole is a model of something that some people think "might" possibly exist.
Drawing such a thing on a paper or modelling it in a(ny) computer does not make it real.

Why do i have to explain this up from its basics? Is it because people
are overly gullable when it comes to quantum gobbledygook?"

Pretty much. There's also the fact that most of them have no education or training in quantum theory, or any physics beyond Newton, if even that. Are you claiming that that you didn't need it explained to you?

I / we don't need to know physics, to understand this simple logic.

Logic is indeed simple. Yet so few understand it, or use it.

Makes a body wonder if we're as smart as we like to claim.
