Castrati served in papal choirs and in Italian churches for well over 300 years. After all, Paul in Corinthians 14:33b-35 wrote, “As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.” As a consequence, castrati were required for the divine lofty notes so pleasing to the congregants and to their Gawd. Pope Sixtus V (Pope 1585-1590) encouraged the practice.
Of you listen to this 1904 recording of the Papal Choir you can hear those "castated to get closer to their God."
