Lions looked pretty good in the last half.

yeah, when the game started they kept making lulay's game very difficult, with penalties,
and it was anyone's game for awhile, till lion's scored that big touchdown just before
halftime, then they didn't look back, and lulay put on a show.

Yeah, WTF...................how can a team that scores a TD on a single play................let an 19 point lead just slip away.........really, really disappointed in the team. We should have had that game. :hmph:

The Montreal Alouettes easily won their game over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 36 to 26.......it was hardly a contest. The Bomber offense was as porous as a net and the defence didn't help by taking costly penalties. Good win by the Als.

A low point in the game came after a direct head hit on Alex Brink by the Al's Davis - you could see Alex's head snap back like it had been hit by a bat. Once again, the refs either missed the play, though one was standing close enough to hear the smack of the helmets or they didn't consider the hit worth a call. At the very least Davis should have been penalized though a game ejection was called for after several replays showed the severity of the hit. There was no excuse for the missed call.

BC travels to Toronto to play the Argonauts on Monday.

The Olympic games are not the only place where the skill sets of referees is being questioned. The reffing in the BC vs Toronto game was abysmal to say the very least.

There were more than 27 penalties called during the game - one that gave BC a TD when replay clearly showed that no offside had been committed -the call by the refs - by the Argos after they had prevented BC from getting over the goal line in 3 successive attempts. The call gave BC the ball on the goal line with a 1rst down and they took it over on the next play.

Not to take anything away from BC - some of the calls on them were bogus too - who played a great game and clearly deserved the win - it is just so disappointing to see game after game where the refs are screwing up royally. Something has to be done to curb the bad calls.

BC won the game 18 to 9. Good on the Lions.

we are all becoming very aware of poor officiating, the NHL being very bad, CFL and the olympics as well,
I guess it is something we just have to 'not accept' but put up with, because starting with the NHL, there
certainly doesn't seem to be any improvement at all over the past few years, and I don't expect anything
positive in the future, it seems the sports has passed by the officials with the talent and quickness,
and something has to be done to bring the officiating up to snuff.

Jon Cornish's long-awaited Coming Out Party surely happened last night. 170 rushing yards, 6 catches for 47 more and a TD later and Jon is back in form. His arrival has been much anticipated after calling out his team awhile back. Great to see Jon walk his talk.

Next to Rickie Ray, Kevin Glen has to be the most laid-back QB in the CFL. Rarely do you see Kevin lose his cool. The odd fist pump after a great delivery seems to be the limit for this very undervalued player. Last night he showed why he has every right to be at the helm of the Stamps - and lucky they are to have him after the injury to Drew Tate. Kevin has quietly worked his way into the confidence of the team. He is not one of the most prolific of passers but what Kevin lacks in pass completion numbers he more than makes up for by his steadiness and ability to read the defence finding ways to get his running backs open - as was seen in the numbers put up by Cornish alone last night.

After the game, John Hufnagel stated: "Ever since (Glenn) got on the field for us, he's shown that he's not perfect, but he's not going to quit," said Calgary head coach John Hufnagel. "He hung in there, made some plays, got cracked a few times but picked himself up and kept making plays."

Henry Burris's stats (21 of 40 for 267 yards, a TD and an interception) were more impressive than Kevin's but it was in a losing effort and frankly it was more Hank in the pocket last night than it was Henry. Hank doesn't control his emotions well sometimes to the detriment of his team. But it wasn't just his lack of control that saw the Ti-Cats lose to the Stamps, it is the fact that Hank doesn't play well with his team at times. Where is Dave Stala this year - the backbone and second-down sure thing for the Ti-Cats last year, his lack of presence is noticeable. Hank has his favorites, he had them in Calgary and he has them in Hamilton. Until he can utilize the entire receiving core, he will continue to be capable of great things but falling short of achieving what counts most - being a team player in a team sport.

The Stamps won the game 31 to 20.

Saskatchewan at Edmonton - Friday

The Riders and Esks meet in an important West Division clash on Friday Night Football, as they look to come out of the bye week with momentum in a rematch of Week 2.

Darian Durant will look to stay hot this week, coming off one of his best starts of 2012 in a Week 5 loss to the Ticats, in which he threw for 380 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 22 yards.

Meanwhile, rookie running back Kory Sheets has a chance to jump up a few spots among the league's rushing yards leaders, as he enters the game with 362 yards and a league-high six touchdowns, along with a solid 5.5 yards per carry average.

The Esks won't make it easy for the Riders to keep that success going though, as the Double E leave the bye with the CFL's top defensive unit, giving up just 15.8 points a game and intercepting seven passes.

Breakout defensive back Joe Burnett leads the Esks' stout secondary with three interceptions of his own, while the Defensive Player of the Month for July J.C. Sherritt leads the league with 41 tackles to power an intimidating front-seven.

Steven Jyles and Hugh Charles will lead the Eskimo offence, looking to pick up where they left off against Winnipeg, when the Esks had one of their stronger offensive games of the season.

These two teams proved to be among the league's most intense, hardest-hitting squads back in the second week of the season, and the rivalry will continue to heat up this week as the intensity level rises.

I am definitely not a happy camper............I am even thinking that maybe (gasp!) we need to be looking at the QB position. Whatever ails the Riders, it starts at the top and the fact is that Darian is just not consistent. He makes some great plays but he also makes some very bad ones. I don't put all the blame on Darian for the Rider's 28 to 20 loss to the Eskimos last night - there is plenty to go around. The one remaining bright spot is Kory Sheets who rarely hits the field without making a great play for the team. The Riders are now sitting at the bottom of the Western Division.

It was a great night for Steven Jyles and crew.............they had a pretty solid game and Steven looked very steady at the helm.

Last year's East Final combatants meet for the first time in 2012 on Thursday, as the Bombers and Ticats battle for key positioning in the East Division.

The Bombers will turn to promising young Joey Elliott to lead their offence as he takes over for Alex Brink.

Elliott has plenty of untapped potential with a frame of six-foot-three, 209-pounds, but will get his first chance to really showcase it this week, coming into Thursday's matchup with just 109 career passing attempts.

He'll get to lean on the recently-emerged, explosive running back Chad Simpson, along with one of the league's top receivers, Chris Matthews. Matthews, a rookie in the CFL, sits fourth in the league in receiving yards with 457.

On the other end, the 'Cats will be leaning on one of the more experienced quarterbacks in the CFL, as Henry Burris enters the game with the third-most career passing attempts in the league right now.

But the 37-year-old has only gotten better with age, as he comes into this contest with a league-high 109.6 quarterback rating, and 16 touchdown passes to just four interceptions.

Burris may have to use his legs a little more in this one though, as he'll be going up against a fast-improving Bombers front-seven, along with a stingy veteran secondary.

CFL Field Pass - Scouting Report: Hamilton @ Winnipeg

I agree with Schultzie.............what the heck are the Bombers going to do if Billy Elliot can't get them a win either. Buck out for who knows how long.............Alex Brink demoted as he couldn't get them a win. Now they are starting their only remaining QB. Better hope Billy can do something great, Bombers.

Correction on Elliott's first name.

Now that the questions surrounding the replacement of Alex Brink by rookie Joey Elliott have been put to rest for awhile, another controversy is bound to arise over the the 6 turn-overs committed by Hamilton in the game, and the really inept play of Henry Burris in the 2nd half. Burris alone was responsible for three of the turn-overs.

Hamilton came out strong in the early going when Chris Williams took a 37-yard pass to the end zone and the Ti-Cats led by 7.

Justin Palardy missed on a 47-yard FG attempt with 5:47 left in the 1rst but the Ti-Cats conceded a single and the Bombers were on the board. Henry Burris would commit his first error of the game with barely a minute to go and the Ti-Cats in the red zone. Calling his own number, Hank held and was set to go over the goal line when tackled by a Bomber defender hence fumbling the ball only to watch it recovered by Winnipeg who did not capitalize on their good fortune and the quarter ended with the Ti-Cats ahead by 6.

As the second quarter got well underway, Palardy connected on one from the 28 to add another 3 points for Winnipeg.

The teams traded 2 and outs until Chris Williams exploded on a 71 yard punt return to the end zone and the Ti-Cats led by 10. The Bombers answered with three points on a Palardy boot from the 37 to end the half with the score at 14 to 7.

The Bombers came within 11 yards of the goal line on their opening drive of the 3rd Q but had to settle for a 14-yarder from Palardy to trail the Cats by just 3 points.

The Bomber D went to work during the 3rd coming up big to prevent a first down on a Ti-Cat 3rd with less than a yard. The Bombers went two and out on their drive but Hamilton was able to put 3 on the board off the boot of Congi.

Winnipeg went 2 and out on their next drive but on what would have been another spectacular punt return for Chris Williams..........he fumbled the ball, the Bombers recovered and Joey Elliott took control. With a 32 yard pass to Clarence Denmark followed by 40-yarder to Chris Matthews, he drove the team down-field to connect up with Chad Simpson for the TD. Just like that, the score was tied and Hamilton seemed in disarray as Henry Burris would fumble the ball once again as the 3rd quarter came to a close.

Bombers took possession first in the 4th and marched the ball down the field to have Chris Matthews deposit it in the end zone and for the very first time this year, the Bombers led in a game. The following booming punt by Renaud caught Hamilton in the end zone conceding a single point and the Bombers had an 8 point lead.

Again the teams traded 2 and outs with the Bombers unable to take of advantage of yet two more forced fumbles by the Ti-Cats. But Hank still had some power in his arm and on the opening play of their next drive he connected with Chris Williams for an outstanding 84-yard pass which Chris took to the end zone - they were successful on the 2-point convert and the game was tied, again.

With under 2 minutes left in the game, Chad Simpson was injured on a play and taken to the sidelines - his replacement Ford would end another successful Bomber drive with a TD of his own. The Bombers were back on top and were to stay that way to win their first game of the season.

It wasn't only turn-overs that plagued the Ti-Cats, costly penalties, dropped passes, mix-ups in play calling all contributed to their demise - they were their own worst enemies.

Final Score: 32 to 25 Winnipeg! Rock on Bombers.

Cory Boyd is set to make his debut in the Eskimos' running game, as the Esks and Als meet for the first time this season on Friday Night Football.

The Esks are coming off another big statement game, after getting big plays on defence and sustained drives on offence along with timely touchdowns in their win over the Riders.

Steven Jyles had his best game of the year for the Esks, completing 18 of 23 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown, while effectively spreading the ball to all of his targets.

Of course, once again, it was the Esks' top-ranked defence that really stole the show, as Joe Burnett had his second defensive touchdown of the season on a 44-yard fumble recovery to put his team ahead in the second half. July's Defensive Player of the Month J.C. Sherritt, meanwhile, had the game-sealing interception to go along with seven tackles.

The Als also come into this one with momentum, getting a road win over division rival Winnipeg before heading into the bye. Now the league's passing yards leader, Anthony Calvillo, will look to lead his team to another big road win to keep his team atop the East Division standings.

Calvillo is once again putting together a phenomenal campaign, throwing for 2,001 yards and 13 touchdowns to just four interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 104.6.

This week will be one of Calvillo's biggest tests of the season, as the league's top passer is pitted against a hungry Eskimo defence.

Cory still has some work to do learning play calls and protecting his QB........didn't really factor in the game last night. As a matter of fact the entire Eskimo team had a hard time factoring in anywhere during the game. Montreal completely dominated both sides of the ball and though they did allow Edmonton to score TDs, they never lost control of the game for the entire night.

Anthony will be 40 this coming week but you sure wouldn't know it by the quality of his game.

It was the first defeat at home for the Eskimos who lost to the Al's 38 to 25.

Toronto @ Calgary - Saturday

By Jeff Krever

If Week 2's result has any bearing, expect plenty of fireworks when the Argos and Stamps meet on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium, as two veteran pivots in new uniforms this season meet for the second time.

Kevin Glenn has put up big numbers all season, but in last week's impressive road win over the Ticats, he took more of a game-management role in looking to get his team the win. Glenn completed 15 of 28 passes for just 141 yards, but also threw for a touchdown and didn't turn the ball over once.

Instead, it was Jon Cornish taking the spotlight, as the Stamps' first-year starter at running back had the best game of his career, rushing for 170 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while adding a team-high 47 receiving yards on six catches.

Most impressive though was his ability to grind out yards late in the game, as he carried the offence deep into Ticat territory to run out most of the remaining clock, keeping Henry Burris off the field and preserving the win.

Success like that on the ground has eluded the Argos for the last three games, which means Chad Kackert will now get his shot to carry the load in the running game for the Double Blue, after star running back Cory Boyd was released over the weekend. Kackert showed flashes last year, and will now team up with Ricky Ray to try to get an offence primed to break out, back on track.

I'm not a Riders fan but can someone tell me why Durant has been converted over to a drop back pocket passer? When he replaced Joseph he did so as an upgrade to all of Joseph's skills, including scrambling/running. I haven't seen him gain a yard on the ground for a couple of years. It's crazy. Even Lulay is ineffective unless he is a threat on the ground. Sometimes one just has to pick up a first down any way they can, including running. A Durant-led offense that has no QB ground yards is and will continue to go nowehere fast.

The Lions defense is stacked. Muamba is developing into another weapon in the defensive backfield. Nice to see their depth on the D-line with Mitchell out.

Wish I knew the answer to that question, Kreskin. Last week he broke out of the pocket and ran for some good yardage. This week he stands there and either throws interceptions or gets sacked - go figure. Two really costly penalties on the opposing QB didn't impress me either - going into the game we were the least penalized team in the CFL, now we are catching up fast.

I keep wondering when the team that went 3 and O early in the season will turn up as they sure haven't lately.

Great game by BC - Lulay continues to impress as does the entire team.

yes, lions are playing well, but their offense is still not leading the team, but the defense is so good
they give the offense time to get it together, another game where lions started to really play around
1/2 time, then took over the rest of the way.

But for a missed opportunity to challenge a completed pass call, Anthony Calvillo's 40th birthday may not have ended the way it did. With but 4:58 remaining in the 4th Q, it appeared as though SJ Green had caught a 40-yard pass from Anthony to put the Als in the red zone...........but replays showed clearly that the ball had hit the turf before Green snatched it up. Why George Cortez - the Hamilton coach - didn't challenge is the question on the minds of many fans today.

In spite of the completed pass call, the Hamilton D stepped up to prevent the Als from scoring a major and the latter had to settle for a Sean Whyte FG.

Mark Trestman - Montreal head coach - challenged a similar call when it first appeared as though Andy Fantuz had the help of the turf, but he lost that one when replays from different angles affirmed the call and Andy had a superb catch to his credit.

Hamilton led through all three quarters and parts of the 4th but with time expired in the 4th a 37-yard FG by Sean Whyte gave Anthony and the Als the 2-point win.

Anthony Calvillo surpassed Warren Moon for the most completed passes by in pro-football and now sits in second place behind Brent Favre.

Final Score: Montreal 31 - Hamilton 29

The BC Lions once again proved why they have first place in so many CFL statistical categories - they are simply unbeatable, it seems. The Blue Bombers did their best to make it a game and for all of the 1rst and most of the 2nd quarter held the Lions off the scoreboard - an achievement in itself considering the powerful offence brought to a game by the Lions. Prevented from taking to the air by a pressuring Bomber defence, Travis Lulay used his legs to make downs and advance the ball.

Finally, in the latter minutes of the 2nd, Paul McCallum was called upon to boot a FG from the 23 - and BC got 3 points on the board. With barely a minute and a half remaining in the 2nd, the Bombers intercepted a Lulay pass but had to give the ball back to the Lions due to a roughing the passer call. Yet another unnecessary roughness call against the Bombers gave the Lions a total of 30 yards and the ball at the 5. On the ensuing play, Travis was sacked but dusted himself off quickly and delivered a hand-off to Harris who scampered across the goal line for the first major of the day. BC led at the half 10 to zip.

I was reminded of that old saying of Pogo's, 'we have met the enemy............and he is us' as I watched the Bomber defence implode last night. Off-sides were called on the Bombers in two consecutive plays last night. Then there were the unnecessary roughness, late hit on the QB, objectionable conduct and pass interference calls and by the end of the night, the Bombers had given the Lions almost a football field's length worth of free yardage - you sure don't win ball games by given the opposition that many yards and most of all you don't do it against the Lions.

In spite of it all, young rookie QB Joey Elliott much to his credit, gave the game his best. For one who was playing in only his second game this year, Elliot showed poise and determination and led his team to score the first TD that the Lions had allowed in 15 quarters of football and breaking the Lions streak - at the least the Bomber's can take that home with them. They might also take some heart from what Travis Lulay said after the game. In a interview with TSN he said, "This was probably the hardest-fought win we've had -- a huge character win for us," said Lulay."

The start of the 4th saw the Bombers down by just two points and then things got interesting. Uncharacteristically, Geroy Simon was tagged for 5-yard off-side penalty but quickly recovered to give the Lions a 1rst down on the next play. Then within two minutes and with the Bombers sitting at 2 and 10, the Lions were hit with two 15-yard penalties - for roughing the passer and face-masking. The Bombers were unable to capitalize on their good fortune but the 3rd down punt by Renaud - who is working on a streak of his own having kicked 7 consecutive balls inside the 10 this season - pinned the Lions at their 5.

Devon Washington intercepted the BC QB's pass on 1 and 10, running it into the end zone, but was ruled down by contact back at the point of contact. The Lions challenged the ruling but lost and the Bombers had the ball. A Justin Palardy FG gave the lead to Winnipeg with just over 7 minutes left in the game. Yet another interception by the Bomber's Bowman also resulted in a Palardy FG who now has 37 consecutive games with a recorded FG, and Winnipeg led by 4 points.

BC took the ball at the 30 on their next drive and with 6 plays for 75 yards went in for the major and BC had the lead back.

Chris Matthews was the back-bone of the Bomber receiving core last night - fighting for every yard and making last ditch efforts to keep his team alive. He, along with Terrence Edwards helped take the Bombers downfield to give Palardy a chance to tie the game which he did with 27 seconds remaining.

The Lions got the ball back at their 35. Paris Jackson and Geroy Simon each contributed 1rst downs but the Lions inexplicably let the time clock run down to a mere second - had the Bombers just let Gore keep running...........but the Big McC took to the field and with time having run out, booted a 41-yarder dead through the uprights for a 20 to 17 BC win.

'Just Enough' reads the headline on TSN's website in their write-up of the game and that is all it took for the Mighty Lions to once again roar with supremacy. They sit top of the league in wins now.

Calgary will stomp into Mosaic Stadium today and the Rider's will once again meet the team that stopped their 3-win streak over five weeks ago. All but one of the Rider games - the BC loss being the exception - were close. The Riders actually led for two of those games only to let the lead slip away.

I have no predictions about this game...........but it sure would be nice to see the Riders win one at home for their beleaguered fans.

Game Times: 12:00 PST/ 3:00 EST

Go, Riders, Go!

One might be forgiven for thinking that with their team down 14 pts after the 1rst half and intermittent game transmission due to an 80+ kph wind at Mosaic they deserved a bit of a break............one might be wrong.

Rod Black is co-anchoring on-field commentary. I have taken to turning the sound OFF.

Not much to say when your team is now sitting at the bottom of their division. About the only bright spot is that after 8 quarters without, the team managed to put a TD on the scoreboard.

The Stamps put on a great show in the first half - Jon Cornish being the driving force behind their efforts. They were held up more in the second half but still managed to hang on, using the clock to their benefit, and winning the game 17 to 10.

In other CFL news, Jock Climie announced at half-time that Paul LaPolice has been given his walking papers by Bomber management. Tim Burke will take over temporary coaching duties until a replacement can be found.

Also, Jerome Messam and Solomon Eliminian have both been released from their NFL teams meaning that they could be available to CFL teams. Now wouldn't it be something if Saskatchewan could nab those two up or at the very least sign Eliminian.
