    thought experiments

I have just bought a book, called "the pig who wanted to be eaten, and 99 other thought experiments" Now I understand it'd be big trouble if i were to copy out the experiments, as some of them are copyrighted and some belong to the author of the book, but I figure I can put them in my own...

can we know anything about wars?

I am starting to think it is impossible for us (the people) to know anything for sure about anyof the wars we pay for. We all know from past experience that during wars, propaganda, more so than usual, is rife, and often hard to believe in hindsight. SO how are we to know anything about what...

    petitions: effective or not?

I am regularly asked to sign petitions and i never do, because if i were a politician and someone handed me a petition it wouldn't mean a damned thing to me. I wouldn't have time to look through it and therefore i'd know it could all be made up names and it wouldn't matter anyway cos like other...

    sudden increase in spam

attached (possibly) is a screenshot of the recent topics screen at the front of this website. It has been slightly doctored to highlight those posts which appear to be spam. I have included the news websites as well, since none of us asked for them to be there and they're drowning all the...

the forum was down and then when it came back up everything had changed. I don't like the new format. And how are we supposed to get our own posts back up? there used to be a button called "my posts"

    entropy

Do you think the principle of entropy can be applied to conversations? If so, is this a direct application or indirect? I think it certainly can be applied... look at some of the threads in cancon. Probably it's an indirect route... brains are physical things and so entropy applies to them...

    avatar

I just realised that during all this time I haven't had an avatar. How can i be cool without one? I need your suggestions on something good for an avatar. And before you suggest i'm just being lazy and not going and finding one for myself, i'll admit to it :D

    World Trade Center

I'm shocked. I just saw a trailer for a film called "world trade center". The trailer showed some people looking worried about each other and then finding each other and cuddling and living happily ever after. Will the idiots in the film industry try to romaticise everything? the only way...

    Hitler's moustache

I've just realised. Hitler was influential in a way that almost no-one thinks about. Imagine if Hitler had never existed. You're thinking to yourself "i'd like to make my moustache more recognisable... a little different" then suddenly you consider shaving off all of it except the bit right...

    evolution and religion

I had a discussion with a christian who was using painting as a tool for preaching in canterbury town centre today, and he used the "evolution can't be explained by science so God must have done it" argument It just occurred to me that it's interesting that evolution is used by BOTH sides of...

    half cents?

Did Canada ever have a half-cent coin? or smaller? I was thinking about this because people often say that they think the penny should be dropped since it's worth nothing very much anyway, and i remembered that in the UK, when i was very small, there was a half-penny coin, often known as a...
